TenerifeThe largest of the seven Canary Islands, Tenerife has long been a family favourite. The island may enjoy a burgeoning tourist trade, but its distinctive landscape is as unspoilt and beautiful as ever. Tenerife no longer houses active volcanoes, but their presence still looms large over the island, with Mount Teide the highest point in Spain at 3,718m above sea level.

Fascinating as Tenerife's geology is, it's probably not the main reason why you'll be booking your partner and brood onto a budget flight to the Canary Islands. That will likely have more to do with the sandy beaches, play centres, water parks and resorts. That's the best thing about Tenerife: everyone gets to have a great time and everyone goes home happy.

Family holidays in Tenerife: Theme parks Family holidays in Tenerife: Theme parks

If you're taking the family to Tenerife, it goes without saying that you'll be visiting a theme park – at least one and possibly all of them. It all depends on the persuasive skills of your kids really. Siam Park is a water world whose rides carry such names as the Tower of Power and The Wave Palace; even grown-ups may be a little daunted by the prospect of facing manmade waves up to 4m high – a world record. Jungle Park and Aqualand are also worth a visit, while an orca show can be experienced at Loro Park.

Family holidays in Tenerife: Beaches Family holidays in Tenerife: Beaches

Before you fly out, it makes sense to gen up on Tenerife's best beaches given that you'll be spending a good portion of your holiday on them. Watersports can be enjoyed at Medano, while Playa de Las Vistas and Playa de Las Americas are perennial favourites. If the kids are still mastering their swimming skills, El Camison provides a safe environment in which to tackle the waves that run lazily across the beach.

Family holidays in Tenerife: Watersports Family holidays in Tenerife: Watersports

When you're not swimming in the sea, you can surf on it or even pedal across it. Watersports include jet skiing, kayaking, flyfish rides and pedal boats. If the kids are too young to tackle jet skiing or bodyboarding, there's always the option of taking a boat ride to go dolphin spotting in the bay. Diving is also popular, with instructors on hand to teach the basics in as little as an hour. Look out for sea turtles and colourful fish as you descend to the ocean floor. Where would you like to explore – a wreck or a reef? It's your call.

Family holidays in Tenerife: Exploring the landscape Family holidays in Tenerife: Exploring the landscape

While hardly short of scenic spots, Tenerife has excelled itself in the village of Masca. High in the Teno Mountains, getting there calls for navigating a tricky hairpin road, but the view from the top makes it all worthwhile. The tiny village, surrounded by dense vegetation, clings precariously to the mountainside. Have you ever witnessed a volcano within a volcano? Of course not. That's why you need to pay a visit to Teide National Park, whose volcanic landscape is pitted with craters and the remnants of lava flow.

Family holidays in Tenerife: Nightlife Family holidays in Tenerife: Nightlife

At night, Tenerife comes to life, with the bars crammed together along Playa de las Americas enjoying the best business. With most bars staying open till 3am – clubs till 5 – there's no rush to head into town. If you're holidaying with the family, of course, the odds are you won't be partying into the small hours. For a more laid-back vibe, try Papagayo Beach Club, which provides a chilled-out setting in which to sip a cocktail as the sun sets. Alternatively, if cabaret and karaoke are your thing, St Eugen's is a fun, lively bar where families are welcome.
