HomeAway travel expert
That moment in life when your parents finally decide you’re responsible enough to go on holiday without them? Exhilarating and daunting in equal measure. It is, after all, a venture into the unknown: a week of endless opportunities and infinite levels of fun with your closest compadres; a getaway that you hope will forge memories to endure a lifetime. Of course, the process of actually booking the trip can often be the most laborious part of it all. In a larger group the preferred destination will inevitably vary, but with a spot of research, a unanimous decision is within your grasp.
On such a trip, you’ll likely want what most young people want – a blazing sun under which to blow off some steam, lively beaches and even livelier nightspots where you can party till the wee hours, and (if the schedule permits it) a few sites of legit cultural interest! Don’t be taken in by the first advert in the window of any high street travel agent, though: browse our guide to some of the finest options.
Top holiday destinations for teenagers
Teenage holidays in Malia
Crete is a largely traditional agricultural island; in fact, it’s not uncommon to see donkeys ambling along the roadside. Not so on the north coast, where the clubbing behemoth of Malia looms large. The Strip that sprawls from the effervescent beach towards the old town has all the bars and clubs you desire, with Apollo and Candy the two most prominent. If it all gets a little too much, you can explore the surrounding streets to find lesser-visited clubs like Pop World, where the ’90s never ended and dancing the night away to S Club 7 is heartily encouraged.

Teenage holidays in Marmaris
The Turkish port of Marmaris, with its pine-clad hills and unspoiled beaches, has always been beautiful; but only in comparatively recent times has the wider world latched on to its Eastern treasures. The aptly named Bar Street is the place to be for nightlife, with over 100 places to enjoy a beer, cocktail – fish bowl if you’re especially parched after a day’s sunbathing. Club Areena is famed for its raucous outdoor foam party, but if dance music isn’t your thing, the self-explanatory Rock Bar may be a superior choice.

Teenage holidays in Tenerife
If you’re looking to remain active by day, the shores around Tenerife are rife with excursions and pastimes to keep you satisfied. The largest of the Canary Islands is a globally renowned haunt among the scuba diving fraternity – not to mention surfers and jet-skiers – all of whom flock here for the warm waters and superb visibility. When you inevitably do head towards one of the ample nightspots, be sure to try out the local banana liqueur beverage, or perhaps a sweet Ron Miel honey rum.

Teenage holidays in Sunny Beach
Bulgaria may not seem, at first glance, like the kind of place attracting a young audience for a summer break – but guess again. Sunny Beach in particular is a world unto itself. Centred almost entirely around tourism, the name really says it all about this vibrant coastal resort, with illimitable thriving beaches and bars very much the epicentre of activity. Fresh is the nightclub which manages to amicably combine these two aspects, affording revellers the opportunity to enjoy a refreshment or two while enjoying the view of the seaside boulevard.

Teenage holidays in Ibiza
It mightn’t be to everyone’s taste, but Ibiza will crop up on most teenagers’ first holiday shortlist. If you haven’t already heard tales from the jewel of the Balearics, there’s a good chance you’ve been living alone in the mountains – but it’d be imprudent not to include the island here. Hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers alight here each summer, embracing both an absurdly plentiful supply of nightclubs and an incalculable sense of joie de vivre. Ibiza Town is the primary hub for such action, with the likes of Pacha and Amnesia perpetually iconic venues.
