Summer holidays in Notting Hill
Having gained recognition as the setting for that iconic romantic comedy, Notting Hill, the area of the same name is a lively and interesting area of West London. In the famous Portobello Market, a historic market dating back to the late nineteenth century, you can search for antiques, vintage clothes, second-hand novels and unique one-off items. The market is open mid-week and on Saturdays, giving you ample opportunity to search for treasures, before grabbing a bite to eat in the various bistros and delis bordering the stalls. Every summer, the area becomes a platform for Europe's largest carnival. The spectacular Notting Hill Carnival is traditionally hosted by the West Indian community, and is seen as an event that honours London's diversity, uniting different cultures together to celebrate music, food and dance. The combination of fantastical costumes, rich aromas from the food stalls, and dynamic music which accompanies the dancing groups, has attracted phenomenal numbers of tourists and locals in past years.
