London summer holidays

Visit a city of historical landmarks and electrifying culture

The iconic London EyeAfter the astonishing success of the London Olympics 2012, England's capital has regained world-wide recognition. London resists fixed notions of what the city represents, refusing to be pigeon-holed as a city with gigantic red buses and curious looking royal guards. Every summer, the city celebrates its multiculturalism, reflected in the various festivals, street parties, restaurants and music events which take place. London’s reputation as a platform for some of the world’s best musical theatre shows, revered Shakespearean performances, and incredible historical areas and monuments in the city, allows visitors to enter and re-enter magical and historical worlds. Visitors can choose to escape into the fantastical world of a West-End production, descend into the ghoulish London Dungeons, or immerse oneself in live music whilst enjoying a beverage on the Camden Lock.

With free admission to a number of world-renowned museums and galleries, London is an accessible cultural and artistic hub. Green spaces are prized in the capital and provide wonderful days out for families and ramblers, seeking to escape the buzzing shopping destinations of Oxford and Carnaby Street. Whether you choose to stay in a studio apartment in London, or a flat in a quieter area of the city, HomeAway’s list of London rentals ensure you relax after soaking in culture at a distinguished gallery, or sampling delicious cuisine in Brick Lane.

Notting Hill Summer holidays in Notting Hill

Having gained recognition as the setting for that iconic romantic comedy, Notting Hill, the area of the same name is a lively and interesting area of West London. In the famous Portobello Market, a historic market dating back to the late nineteenth century, you can search for antiques, vintage clothes, second-hand novels and unique one-off items. The market is open mid-week and on Saturdays, giving you ample opportunity to search for treasures, before grabbing a bite to eat in the various bistros and delis bordering the stalls. Every summer, the area becomes a platform for Europe's largest carnival. The spectacular Notting Hill Carnival is traditionally hosted by the West Indian community, and is seen as an event that honours London's diversity, uniting different cultures together to celebrate music, food and dance. The combination of fantastical costumes, rich aromas from the food stalls, and dynamic music which accompanies the dancing groups, has attracted phenomenal numbers of tourists and locals in past years.
