Where to stay in the Algarve Where to stay in the Algarve

The Algarve really is awash with beautiful seaside towns to explore and beautiful towns further inland. With the biggest draws for most being the beaches there are hundreds of great destinations to choose from.

The capital of the Algarve, Faro, is a great place to stay and is the regional centre of trade and commerce. The highlights are the gorgeous marina and the Ria Formosa Lagoon and island barrier make for an incredible place to while away a lazy afternoon. For the best beach resort you should consider Albufeira which is the Algarve’s largest resort and boasts incredible sands and a lively night life and bar scene. For great nightlife and incredible beaches consider Lagos which has beautiful outcrops of sandstone amidst secluded beaches.  For sheer romance and beauty you cannot do better than the charming, riverside, town of Tavira. The town boasts almost 40  churches and beautiful architecture with the Gilao River wending through the middle with  an ancient Roman bridge connecting both sides of the own.

Finally we’d recommend Silves for anyone wanting to enjoy the Algarve’s history and culture. Silves was the Moorish capital of Al-Gharb and contains incredible remains of the huge castle that still dominates the town’s skyline. While these are all fantastic destinations anywhere you choose to stay will provide you with a warm and welcoming atmosphere and beautiful beaches and scenery as well!

Cultural Delights of the Algarve Cultural Delights of the Algarve

If you’ve ever spent a summer holiday on the Costa del Sol then you know that it can be very non-local through most of the area. While you’ll find plenty of ex-pats and tourists in the Algarve the whole region still manages to retain an incredible local culture and atmosphere. The bars and restaurants serve mouth watering Portuguese food; from beautiful seafood dishes to spiced stews that belie the country’s colonial history.

The locals themselves are generally friendly and welcoming; and learning a little of the language will go a very long way to making new friends. The nightlife along the coast is incredible with a more sedate atmosphere than many beach resorts usually offer; but still with plenty of fun. Finally the artistic communities that litter the beautiful seaside resorts and come here for the weather and the scenery mean there are always fantastic exhibits to see as well as art, food and music festivals throughout most of the towns!
