Puglia summer holidays Get off the beaten track this summer
HomeAway travel expert
The heel of the boot that is Italy, Puglia is located in the most southeasterly tip of the country. Perhaps not the first destination that springs to mind when pondering an Italian sojourn, the region is nevertheless one of the most unspoiled havens in the country. Puglia is home to many attractions, and should be of particular interest to those plotting a relaxing summer getaway. History enthusiasts will also enjoy the cultural appeal of the coastline, scattered as it is with medieval landmarks bearing testament to the region’s battle-torn past.
The main cities in the area - Bari and Lecce - certainly have plenty to offer holidaymakers, including rustic cottages and castles. At HomeAway Holiday Rentals, we have an extensive catalogue of spacious, affordable villas in Puglia, enabling you to get the most out of your summer holiday. Why not browse those properties with stunning Adriatic Sea views, swimming pools or both? Before you do, here’s our guide to the region’s major highlights.
Top five Puglian destinations
A broad term admittedly, but then Puglia’s coastline is the longest in Italy. There are 800 kilometres of sun-kissed beaches to explore, looking out to where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. Over the centuries these shores have laid witness to countless attempted invasions by the Spanish, Turks and Greeks to name but a few, and the fortified remains of the many watchtowers stand proudly to this day. If history isn’t quite your thing you can always go native and join the hordes of local sunbathers who frequent the area in the summer.

Summer holidays in Lecce
Dubbed by those in the know as “the Florence of the South,” the city of Lecce is located at the southernmost tip of Puglia - the stiletto of Italy, if you will. Notable primarily for its stunning architecture, it’s impossible not to fall for the city’s Baroque charm. One must-see is the breathtaking Piazza Del Duomo. Located in the heart of Lecce, you’ll feel a million miles away from it all as you venture down the small alleyway which opens out to the majestic stone pier and historic buildings. The Piazza Sant’Oronzo also hosts some of the city’s most spectacular sights.

Food and drink
No trip to Italy would be complete without sampling the local cuisine, and Puglia is no exception when it comes to culinary delights. There are of course the traditional staples of pizza and pasta, but why not indulge in some of the more regional dishes? Wine, hand-baked bread and olive oil are very much the order of the day, with the quality of the local produce used in the various family-run restaurants exceptional. Whether it’s antipasti, fresh olives or locally-caught seafood, there’ll be something to satisfy everyone’s appetite.

Puglia’s very own national park, the mountain towers over the nearby town of Monte Sant’Angelo. Dominating the skyline of the Gargano Peninsula, the best vantage from which to view the mountain is afforded by the town itself. Grab a bench, shield your eyes from the sun and take in a sight of ethereal beauty. While you’re here, a trip to the sanctuary of the archangel Michael is well worth a visit, as is the unfinished Norman castle. For nature-lovers, a stroll through the fragrant olive groves that span the nearby Rifugio Foresta is a must, as is a trip to the volcanic Triassic-period rocks that follow the rugged coastline.

Grotte di Castellana
An attraction that is sure to go down a storm with the kids - as well as with fun-loving adults - this spectacular cave system is a sight to behold. If you’re feeling particularly energetic, why not take the 3 kilometre, two-hour long trek to the stunning white cave and immerse yourself in some of the world’s most breathtaking crystalline stone formations? An untouched secret before its relatively recent discovery in 1938, the system takes explorers on a 70 metre deep journey amidst a fantasy world of stalagmites and stalactites. Grotte di Castellana may sound more like a country manor than a cave, but the only family jewels to be found here are still in the ground that formed them.
