Provence summer holidays in Avignon
Steal a photo opportunity on Avignon’s iconic bridge, which crosses the Rhone river. Avignon is one of the major cities within Provence and has a rich Roman heritage, with ramparts that enclose the city. Home to the Papacy in the fourteenth century, the city’s Pope’s Palace is one of the largest Gothic palaces in the world. The palace is also home to Avignon’s famous annual Theatre Festival, held in July, which is one of the oldest of its kind in the world. The neighbouring Rocher des Doms gardens is an ideal spot to unwind and enjoy a panoramic view of the city and its surrounding region. Holidaymakers are invited to sample the daily food market in Les Halles d’Avignon. Here they can sample local delicacies such as olive oil, tapenade, wines, cheeses and pastries, as well as experience the traditional market atmosphere characteristic of the region. For a more serene alternative, explore the smaller, neighbouring villages of Les Baux de Provence, Roussilon and Arles.
