Family summer holidays
After parents have dutifully worked hard all year, and kids have done their time in classroom, family summer holidays are the first thing that spring to mind. You may be planning your break as snow patters on the window, and who can blame you? The coming of the summer holidays promises to keep little ones blissfully busy; and besides, few can resist the gorgeous sunshine pouring down upon Europe. Of course, Florida’s another fantastic option for sunny summer getaways: though hot and relatively humid, the allure of world-renowned theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios is just too tempting a prospect to pass up. But whether your dreams are far-flung or somewhat semi-local, it’s never too early to start planning that break.

Family summer breaks in Sardinia, Italy
For families with a taste for old-world charm, nothing beats a break in Sardinia. Lying just to the west of the Mediterranean Peninsula, Corsica’s neighbour is a haven for lovers of great cuisine, beautiful landscapes and plain, old fun in the sun. It’s touted to have some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean, and to see it is to believe it: Coggi, Cala Gonone and Costa Smeralda are superb stretches of pearl-white sand, leading down to crystal-clear waters. But surely Le Pelosa, not far from Stintino, is the finest. For days filled with sun, sea and sand, you won’t be disappointed, but remember the high-factor suncream: with the sun raising temperatures to a blissful 29°C, you’re going to need it.
Family summer holidays in Brittany, France
For the family that differs in travel tastes, Brittany truly has it all: world-class golf courses, signature spas, incredible shores and ample sports opportunities are just a handful of options offered up in this little corner of France. Take cliff-top walks as you listen to the tide, enjoy delicious French fare in pretty fishing villages, or visit one of hundreds of historical sites that litter this spectacular region. Rennes - just two hours or so from Paris - is the region’s hub, and provides yet another great alternative for family summer breaks: why not have the best of both, dividing your time between the city and seaside? You shouldn’t expect scorching highs, but temperatures around 21°C in July will certainly please, and there are nine hours of sunshine a day.
Family summer holidays in Blackpool, England
Our fair British shores might not be balmy, and they rarely boast temperatures which warrant an impromptu dip in the sea. But for the family seeking out a seaside summer holiday closer to home, they offer more than their fair share of fun. Of particular note is Blackpool, a long-held favourite with families seeking 24-hour entertainment. This town in northwestern England is home to much-loved attractions, including Pleasure Beach and Blackpool Tower, the casino-laden Golden Mile and the beautiful Tower Ballroom. Hop on the antique tramway and enjoy an ice cream on the pier, before little ones take a classic donkey ride. And don’t forget: bagging that stripy stick of rock candy before you leave is an absolute must.
Family summer holidays in Valais, Switzerland
It boasts some of Europe’s most diverse landscapes, and fantastic outdoor sports opportunities; but Valais is often overlooked as a destination reserved for winter sports. Yet while it’s a ski haven in snowy months, it’s a land of sunshine, superb natural sights and a dazzling array of outdoor fun come July. Families with a longing for relaxing lakeside breaks will love Lüsgersee, a little Alpine body of water sitting above Bruchegg; while those seeking untouched wildernesses can’t fail to enjoy hiking in Binntal Valley. You can enjoy classical music concerts in the village of Ernen, soak your days with adrenaline while river rafting, or simply laze in the midst of untouched wildlife: in Valais, the options are endless.
Family summer breaks in Orlando, Florida
Quintessential family icon and all-round dream destination, no article on family summer holidays could realistically overlook Orlando. Home to the highest concentration of theme parks in the world (many of which are at the forefront of ride technology), it’s the one holiday spot that ensures no complaints from the kids. Once you’ve explored the Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot Center (to name just three of Disney World’s parks), head for Universal Studios to become part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. At night, choose from an incredible range of restaurants, with everything from burger joints to fine dining on the menu. For the young (or young at heart) there’s simply nowhere more exciting.
