Circuit de BarcelonaHaving celebrated its centenary in 2013, the Spanish Grand Prix is one of the oldest Formula One races in the world. May 2014’s event will see the show come to the Circuit de Barcelona, Catalunya, and race fans won’t want to miss out on what’s set to be a thrilling event. Ahead of the contest, media attention turns to national treasure and current titleholder Fernando Alonso, who seems set to once again triumph on home soil. One thing is for sure, though: being the patriots they are, the Spaniards will turn out en masse to support the Asturian-born Ferrari driver.

The Spanish Grand Prix has been held in a number of venues over the years – Jerez de la Frontera and Jarama among them – but Barcelona has been its home since ’91. There was some talk in 2013 of a possible venue change to Valencia, whose dynamic street circuit has previously hosted the European Grand Prix, but the mooted switch did not come to fruition. All the better; the accessibility of Barcelona Airport means it’s easy as can be to make your way to this storied tournament.

Spanish Grand Prix 2014: schedule Spanish Grand Prix 2014: schedule

The event will run from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 May 2014. The first two days, as ever, are reserved for practice and qualifying sessions. This is when the drivers, and their teams, get a chance to test their tyres on the baking tarmac, making necessary amendments before getting down to business for real. The blue riband event itself, of course, occurs on Sunday.

With over 3,000 properties to choose from in Barcelona alone, a HomeAway property makes the perfect base from which to enjoy this spectacular event, and – of course – explore the sights of Catalunya’s colourful capital. However, the track is also easily accessible by Spain’s superior public transport links; take advantage of the Sagalés bus service direct from the centre of Barcelona, or catch the RENFE train from Passeig de Gràcia or Barcelona-Sants in the city centre to Montmel train station, where a regular shuttle bus will deliver you directly to your destination, leaving the driving to the pros!

Many ticketing sites are offering special discounts for the capital’s tourist meccas; why not take advantage and extend your three-day trip to explore everything Spain’s second-largest city has to offer? Formula One isn’t the only sport worth viewing in this region – football fans should head to view the superstars of FC Barcelona do their thing on the pitch. If a game doesn’t coincide with your trip, the Camp Nou stadium itself is well worth exploring. On Sunday afternoons, the perimeter of the San Antoni book market comes to life and anyone with a keen interest in the region’s history really ought to immerse themselves in this celebration of language diversity.
