Romantic city breaksRomantic short breaks and weekend getaways
Sometimes couples need to break away from their everyday lives: take a romantic holiday in a place that is close enough to travel to, but far enough from home to get away from the humdrum. There are obviously cities renowned as some of the most romantic in the world, but there are also some which may not be as obvious when thinking about a truly romantic city break. A few of our pointers for a romantic city break? Avoid the hustle and bustle of busy hotels and resorts, and instead opt for self-catering, private accommodation where you can take your break at your own pace. This is an excellent way to ensure much needed privacy during your romantic holiday.
There will be times you will want to get out and see things, but there will be times when you want to stay in and enjoy a candle-lit dinner, before relaxing in your private hot tub before retiring for the evening! A private holiday rental will give you these little added luxuries, so important when planning that much-needed getaway. Below is a list of some of the cities we find the most romantic for couples, whether you feel you need to rejuvenate or are simply in need of some time away: either way, the following cities are excellent choices.
Five ideal romantic destinations
Whilst we recognise that Paris may seem a bit cliché, there is no city in the world quite as romantic as this. There are so many things to see and do in Paris that we could never begin to cover the whole of it here; nonetheless, we do have a few suggestions to get that spark going! Begin your holiday with a cruise on the Seine River, which can be done during the day or in the evening complete with dinner, before enjoying a spot of sightseeing on land. Yes, the Louvre, Notre-Dame and the Eiffel Tower are some of the most popular things to see, but for a truly romantic experience, venture into quiet streets off the beaten path: you'll find some of the loveliest little Parisian cafes tucked away in alleyways, but also some truly magnificent gardens where you can plan a picnic for two.
Venice is another of the world’s most notable cities for romance. Imagine a quiet gondola ride for two, which takes you slowly through the canals as you are serenaded by wonderful Italian music. There are quiet islands nearby which are accessible by motorboat, but if you really want to experience romance in Venice, then you might like to follow in the footsteps of one of the world’s most celebrated lovers, Casanova. Visit the Doge’s Palace, where he was imprisoned before his escape, or sit and drink wine at Do Spade, a bar near the Rialto Bridge on Calle de Spade. This is one of the places where Casanova melted the hearts of many, so you can try your chances too! When tired of being around the crowds, why not stop off at a small market, and pick up something to prepare at your own private retreat?
Prague, Czech Republic
There is no such thing as the most romantic season in Prague, as every season in this great city lends its own bit of romance in one form or another. One thing we can say for sure is that no place in Prague is more romantic than Petřín. Lovers have been coming here and meeting by the statue of Karel Hynek Mácha for years. Why? Well, legend has it that any love, which is confirmed here by a kiss, will last an eternity. What could be more romantic than that? The city also has a number of wellness spas for couples who would like to spend some time being pampered together, enjoying the amazing aromas and lapping up the sense of tranquillity.
You can always plan a busy holiday in Vienna, but when you want to relax, there are a number of suitable activities. Book an apartment for the weekend and you could hop in and out of places like Café Sacher for a delightful pastry: its 19th century red velvet setting is made all the more romantic by the piano music in the background. Another thing you won't want to miss whilst on your romantic holiday is the Riesenrad Ferris Wheel. Here you can experience an exciting view of the beautiful cityscape by day, or if you take your ride after dark, admire the spectacular lights of the city. If your lover is afraid of heights, it'll only make for a nice cuddle as you slowly make your way to the very top! Finally, a horse-drawn carriage ride through Vienna is perhaps one of the most romantic things you can do here.

One of the most romantic places to visit while in Budapest is Margaret Island. The luxurious islet is approximately 2 kilometres long and located along the river Danube, and proves a wonderful place for a quiet walk among the trees, a thermal bath, or a nice picnic on the lawn amidst the flower gardens, which are kept in pristine condition. If you want a romantic place to enjoy the local cuisine whilst there, a great choice is Holdudvar, a restaurant and bar that never closes and has a wonderful variety of culinary treats and cocktails to sample. The best way to get to the island is by hiring a pedal carriage, as it enables you to enjoy the island at your own, daydream-like pace.
