ExmoorSeptember is a great time for booking a British holiday cottage. With the kids back at school, rates are lower, and there’s still some lingering warmth in the sun’s rays provided you stray far enough south. Book a long weekend, or a week if you can stretch to it, and prepare to see the UK in a whole new light.

Where do you wanna stay? From Cornwall to Orkney and from East Yorkshire to Flintshire, the UK’s coastline is dotted with scenic cottages that promise all the staples of the quintessential British holiday: long walks on the beach, leisurely rounds of golf and fishing. Inland, the countryside is equally scintillating, from the mountains, rivers and moorland that make up the Cairngorms to the lakes and fells that characterise the Cotswolds. Pick your favourite part of the UK or throw a dart at a map and pray you strike St Andrews ahead of Skegness.

September holiday cottages in Conwy September holiday cottages in Conwy

The walled town of Conwy in North Wales is the setting for a picturesque holiday against a stunning backdrop. In the distance, the Snowdonia mountains are engulfed by clouds as the town stands in the shadow of its medieval castle. Built in the 13th century on the orders of Edward I, the castle is flanked by the old city walls which are still intact today. If architecture is your thing, Conwy is also notable for its major bridges including the spectacular Conwy Railway Bridge, built in 1849. Ambivalent about bridges? That’s OK, there’s also an excellent golf course in Conwy and a bustling farmers’ market to peruse.

September holiday cottages in Exmoor National Park September holiday cottages in Exmoor National Park

One of Britain’s greatest national parks, Exmoor is a haven where nature reigns supreme and wildlife flourishes. Check in to a holiday cottage in the area and prepare to fill your days with hiking, horse riding and cycling – interspersed with more leisurely pursuits, such as sitting in the village pub. Fish for trout early in the morning; sample cream teas in the afternoon; watch kingfishers and otters as dusk falls. There’s a lot of pretty in this part of the world – and it doesn’t end when darkness descends. Exmoor National Park is Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve, so don’t forget to look up; on a clear night, the heavens are carpeted with stars. Watch them shimmer, sparkle and shoot.

September holiday cottages in Buckinghamshire September holiday cottages in Buckinghamshire

Less than an hour’s drive from London lies Buckinghamshire, an unspoilt expanse of rolling hills, dykes and stiles, footpaths and brooks that merrily gurgle their way to the coast. The best part of this leafy region is the Chilterns, a 60-mile stretch of idyllic countryside that runs from Buckinghamshire to Hertfordshire. Set aside a day for exploring Hambleden Valley, its bucolic charms augmented by the high profile movies that have been filmed here, including Sleepy Hollow and The Avengers. If the valley’s thatched cottages look vaguely familiar, you’ll know why.

September holiday cottages in Staffordshire September holiday cottages in Staffordshire

Posited in the heart of England, Staffordshire is an overlooked region that warrants a second chance. From Weston Hall, a magnificent listed building in 20 acres of gardens, to Lower Drayton Farm, a family-friendly centre complete with wire death slide and assault course, Staffordshire is nothing if not diverse. Get better acquainted with the past during a visit to Mill Meece Pumping Station, whose huge steam engines once supplied water to Stoke and Newcastle and savour a moment’s contemplation at the National Memorial Arboretum. 280 war memorials are set amidst 50,000 trees, making for a tranquil spot in which to gather your thoughts and pay your respects. Elsewhere, one of the UK’s largest collections of aircraft can be found at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford.

September holiday cottages in Oban September holiday cottages in Oban

Oban, on the West Coast of Scotland, is a dreamy, mystical place; an area of exceptional beauty and utter tranquility. The town bills itself as Scotland’s seafood capital, and for good reason: prawns, langoustines, scallops, cod and lobster are among the sea creatures landed at its bustling harbour. While much of the fare is then transported to Glasgow and the rest of Scotland, the freshest seafood can be sampled at the town’s waterfront pubs and bistros. Cuan Mor combines good homemade food with hand-crafted beers and live music, while Chartroom II promises some of the finest views on the West Coast.
