From 29 - 31 May, thousands of double-denim-clad fans descend upon the Parc Del Forum in what promises to be a weekend of tunes old and new, from genres far and wide. That’s right, kids, it’s that time of year again: Primavera Sound 2014. Its location in the heart of Barcelona means that Primavera is the perfect musical destination for festival goers who like their days cultured and their nights loud. Don’t forget your sunglasses – nestled on the Costa Blanca, you’re guaranteed blue skies and non-stop sunshine for the whole weekend.
Primavera has come a long way since Arman Van Helden headlined its first edition in 2001, and it brings out the big guns yet again for this year’s line-up. Headliners include alternative rock legends Pixies, Canadian superstars Arcade Fire and, excitingly, Neutral Milk Hotel who, after a brief hiatus, have decided to bring their reunion tour to Catalonia. The rest of the line-up is a tantalising mix of talent from around the globe, which is sure to have everyone on their feet and wanting more.

Primavera Sound 2014: what to expect
Primavera is certainly the most civilised member of the Spanish festival scene. Less rowdy than Benicássim, and more sophisticated than its Sónar counterparts, you shouldn’t expect to emerge covered in mud – or beer. On the contrary, you’ll find it difficult to tear yourself away from the chorizo stalls and pop-up wine bars to see any bands at all. With an eclectic range of sounds, from indie and pop to hip-hop, dance and metal, we’re sure you’ll find a way.

Primavera Sound 2014: ticketing
The best things in life are free, and that's certainly true of Primavera Sound 2014. This year, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday's headline acts are set to perform in front of thousands in the city's Parc de la Ciutadella and Parc del Fòrum, and entry won't cost you a centimo. Aforementioned eateries and wineries will set up camp amongst the urban greenery, so pull up a pew – picnic blankets are amongst only a few of the festival's quirky giveaways – and take it all in. For those who want to extend their festival experience, limited weeklong, all-access tickets are still available from €195 – and weekend-only tickets are yours from €160.

Primavera Sound 2014: what to do with your downtime
Barcelona is surely Europe’s city that has it all. Want a beach holiday? Just head down to Barceloneta for mojitos on the beach. Culture vulture? Gaudi has made his mark on every corner of Barcelona, from the impressive Park Guell to the magnificent (and as yet unfinished!) Sagrada Familia. In search of souvenirs? Look no further than La Rambla, Barcelona’s bustling central street where you’ll find everything from live animals to local art. A history buff? Scale Montjuic (white-knuckle cable car optional) to visit the Castle of Montjuic and experience an impressive view over this unique city, from the site of the 1992 Olympic Games.

Primavera Sound 2014: get your eat on
Catalunya boasts some of Europe’s best cuisine (in fact, El Bulli, in nearby Roses, has been named the best example of haute cuisine on the planet; it’s even had a film made in its honour!), and you shouldn’t leave without taking a visit to El Xampanyet. The best thing about this unique restaurant is that you don’t need to worry about the menu – the waiters bring you a selection of their best dishes, and you’re virtually guaranteed to like each one.
The gothic quarter is lined with impressive restaurants (top tip: be sure to check their lunchtime ‘Menu Del Dia’ for some bargains) including El Gran Café, a classic establishment that looks like it hasn’t changed since the 1940s – and refreshingly, it seems nor have its prices! If you’re looking for something a little more refined, look no further than the marina, which boasts some of the finest seafood you’ll ever have the pleasure of sampling.

Primavera Sound 2014: and to drink?
Catalonia is the home of cava, and no visit to the city is complete without making a pitstop in one of its famous cava bars. El Rincon del Cava, situated in the trendy Poble Sec, is a great place to while away the hours on a low budget – and you can sample some of the best tapas the city has to offer. Walking into Bar Pastis feels like entering another era, while the Wax Museum, off La Rambla, is certainly a surreal experience. Furthermore, if that June Barcelona heat is proving a little too fierce, you can always cool off at the Ice Bar on Barceloneta Beach. When the wine is this cheap, it’d be rude not to…
