Paris MastersIt may not be among tennis’s four hallowed Grand Slam events, but the Paris Masters is nonetheless one of the sport’s blue riband events. The ninth and final ATP Masters 1000 event in the annual calendar, it precedes the ATP World Tour Finals, held across the Channel in London, and offers the world’s best players a chance to claim silverware before the close of the year. Played indoors in the opulent Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, one of France’s premier sports stadia, the Parisian courts replicate the playing conditions of the World Tour Finals exactly, owing to changes made to the surface in 2012.

It’s not just the history and prestige of the Paris Masters that make it popular among the sport’s elite; it is also vitally important as a ranking event, not least as it provides the sport’s top dogs a last chance to clinch one of the remaining qualifying spots in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. If you’re heading along to the 2014 event, you’re sure to catch some fantastic tennis. And with a city like Paris to explore, it could be a memorable break away from the court, too.

Paris Masters 2014: everything you need to know

Paris Masters 2014: setting Paris Masters 2014: setting

The Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy is one of the tennis world’s most impressive arenas. Able to pack a capacity 14,500 crowd within its rafters, it compares well with the likes of Wimbledon’s Centre Court (15,000) and Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena (14,820). The tournament itself attracts a knowledgable, friendly and even-tempered crowd. In recent years, organisers have also worked on bolstering the entertainment provided to spectators; players step on the court to the strains of rock music, while composers, artists and lighting technicians work in tandem to produce a show you won‘t forget in a hurry.

Paris Masters 2014: ticketing Paris Masters 2014: ticketing

Information regarding ticketing for the Paris Masters 2014 hasn’t yet been released, but general release tickets will likely go on sale, as they did in 2013, in early September; pre-sale tickets, meanwhile, are available to French Tennis Federation members from July. A variety of packs are available, so you can pick up passes for day sessions, night sessions, or special whole day tickets, enabling you to catch as many as ten hours’ worth of action. Alternatively, you could benefit from a 15% discount if you purchase two, four or seven-day packs, which range from €38 to €286.

Paris Masters 2014: schedule Paris Masters 2014: schedule

Commencing on 27 October, and concluding on 2 November, the 2014 Paris Masters will attract the cream of the crop – and the winner will collect a cool cheque for €522,000. If you want to clap your eyes on some of tennis’s future stars, though, you can watch the qualifiers do battle for a berth in the main draw between 25 - 26 of October; tickets can be purchased on the gate for as little as €10, while under-15s can grab a seat for €5. You never know, a qualifier you watched for the price of a coffee and croissant could make the final the following week, as Pole Jerzy Janowicz did in 2012.

Paris Masters 2014: history Paris Masters 2014: history

The Paris Masters, prestigious as it is, is the city’s second most famous tennis tournament – behind the red clay of the French Open. Since 1968, only two men have managed to “do the double” and win both events: Andre Agassi managed the feat in 1999, and Roger Federer achieved the same when he claimed the Masters title in 2011. The French crowd have been spoiled in recent years, with a Frenchman making it to the final of the tournament from four consecutive years between 2008 and 2011; only one, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, claimed the trophy, when he defeated David Nalbandian in 2008.

Paris Masters 2014: escape the crowds Paris Masters 2014: escape the crowds

Paris is a beautiful city. That much is generally accepted by one and all. The only problem with it being so popular, of course, is the crowds – which, happily, aren’t so plentiful when the Paris Masters is held, in blustery late October and early November. So throw on a coat, slide on a pair of gloves and hit the city’s best spots without having to wait in line; you’re unlikely to even have to queue to scale the Eiffel Tower, while a multitude of hot crepe and chestnut vendors allow you to stave off the cold.
