The time has come, once again, for Monte Carlo to host its annual tennis tournament: the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Monte Carlo, a city named after Charles III, Monaco's beloved early 19th-century prince, is home to an unending list of illustrious residents; namely actors and sportspersons such as Bono, Lewis Hamilton and Ringo Starr. The city, perched upon an escarpment at the base of the Maritime Alps along the French Riviera, is best known for its hard gambling, super-fast cars, towering, pearl-white yachts and other such displays of extravagance. To a pair of humbler eyes, this all may appear as a feast of indelicacy – but we mustn't forget that Monte Carlo is also a small and burgeoning business centre encouraged, no doubt, by its generous position on taxation.
This prestigious Masters tournament will take place a stone's throw from Monte Carlo, in a small area known as Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, a delightful ancient town steeped in history. Held within the swank Monte-Carlo Country Club, inside an impressively capacious arena, the world's top tennis talent are scheduled to do battle.

2014 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters: setting
With its position adjacent to the sea, the Monte-Carlo Country Club is in quite possibly the most desirable location of the entire ATP Masters Series. Nestled somewhat cosily in the corner of the island and surrounded by the large towers of the town, the spectators are granted a spectacular view of both the architecture on one side, and the calm blue sea on the other. The centre court is large enough to pack a capacity 9,000 crowd within its rafters, a reasonable figure in tennis terms comparable to the Olympic Stadium in Moscow (11,400) and the Lotus Court in Beijing (10,000). The attending crowd have been known to be well mannered, friendly, excitable and rather knowledgeable about the event; you shouldn't have to look far to find other like-minded folk who are up for a friendly chat.

2014 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters: ticketing
Tickets for the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters are currently on sale. The prices up until the quarterfinals range between €20 and €145; from the quarter finals to the finals, between €47 and €125. If you want to enjoy the business end of the tournament, the finest seats in the arena are packaged at €600 collectively for the final three days. There are, unfortunately, no special offers available as the deadline has already passed – but there could well be a variety of packages offering discounts to those purchasing tickets for matches both at the Centre Court and the Court Des Princes.

2014 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters: history
The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters has been in existence since 1897; held on clay courts each year between the months of April and May, it is one of only three ATP Masters events held on the famous red dirt. There have been, at present, 107 previous tournaments, so there’s a fair bit of history to the event. Since becoming an "open" event in 1969, no player has dominated Monte-Carlo quite like Rafael Nadal – the winner of eight consecutive titles between 2005 - 2012, an Open Era record. Nadal's iron grip on this tournament has, however, recently been broken; Novak Djokovic trumped the Spaniard in straight sets in last year’s final. This year promises to be the tightest and most exciting tournament yet, with the new champ Djokovic keen to retain his title.

2014 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters: after the event
I would certainly advise exploring this wonderful city, which has been immortalised in such films as Never Say Never Again, GoldenEye, Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief and, more recently, Iron Man 2. While away the days visiting Casino Square, Monte-Carlo's most notable and instantly recognisable landmark; Museo Oceanografico, an aquarium considered to be one of the best in the world; the chic Larvotto beach; the Opera House; the Japanese Gardens; and, in addition, the myriad museums and galleries: all great options if you wish to enhance your trip when you break from courtside.
