MonacoFor a small principality, Monaco fairly packs a punch. What the sovereign state may lack in numbers (its population measures just 36,000) it more than makes up for in international clout. Monaco is well connected, well moneyed and well endowed in every other metric that matters to the world’s movers, shakers and powerbrokers.

Most of us can only raise a wry smile at the antics of Monaco’s billionaire playboys with their yachts that turn into submarines and their vast sums of wealth that miraculously turn into even bigger pots of cash. While we’re unlikely to ever berth our private vessel in Port Hercule, there’s nothing stopping us from rubbing shoulders with Monaco’s elite – even if it’s only for one weekend. Between 22 - 25 May, the Formula One Grand Prix tears through the streets of Monaco. Start saving now, and you could take your place on the sidelines, ready to witness the greatest race of all.

The world’s most glamorous street race, Monaco is a circuit that takes no hostages. It’s the one that every driver on the F1 circuit desperately wants to win, for the prestige, for the prize money and for the right to be crowned honorary prince of the sovereign state. As the world’s most famous F1 circuit, Monaco’s landmarks are familiar to millions: the start at Casino Square; the long tunnel that opens out to the bay; drivers speeding past superyachts; and La Racasse, the city’s most venerable restaurant. No one asks for directions to the race course in Monaco – Monaco is the race.

2014 Monaco Grand Prix: ticketing 2014 Monaco Grand Prix: ticketing

Ticketing at Monaco ranges from the surprisingly cheap to the unsurprisingly expensive. The cheapest grandstand tickets can be obtained for Thursday 22 May, when the pre-match practicing gets underway. Similarly, on Saturday, grandstand tickets remain affordable, with a scaling price point depending on your position in relation to the course. Tickets for the main event on Sunday 25 May are in short supply, with many of the grandstands already sold out. VIP tickets can still be purchased for the terraces and F1 Paddock Club, but come with a commensurate price. Your only other option is to track down a long-lost relative/oligarch who can be persuaded to let you watch the action from their luxury yacht in the bay. Good luck.

The first practice session on the famous Monaco track commences on Thursday 23 May. By 7am on Friday morning, the road has closed once again in readiness for the Porsche Supercup qualifying session. F1 qualifying sessions start in earnest at 11am on Saturday. Then, on Sunday the great race gets underway at 2pm, with 78 laps or two hours of adrenaline-charged racing.

If you’re spending the weekend in Monaco, it stands to reason that you’ll be stepping out for the night; quiet evenings in simply aren’t an option in the party capital of Old Europe. The question is not which bars are worth frequenting, but rather which ones you can afford to frequent. Jimmy’z is a legendary Monaco sports club where champagne starts at €350 a bottle. Brasserie de Monaco, beside the port, brews excellent organic beer on the premises, while you’ll need to be looking dapper to get into The Living Room.

Monaco’s legendary culinary scene is made up of grand French restaurants and smaller brasseries situated along the winding backstreets. Le Petit Bar serves small but succulent portions of fresh seafood and tender steaks, Polpetta delivers old-world charm in a warm, rustic setting, while for bon vivants and socialites blessed with daddy’s credit card, it’s straight to Le Louis XV Alain Ducasse at Hotel de Paris.
