Madeira Atlantic FestivalThe archipelago of Madeira is, for the most part, a picture of relaxation – a scenic and enchanting region of Portugal perfectly monikered as the Pearl of the Atlantic. For the month of June though, particularly every Saturday throughout the month, the stunning island capital of Funchal is transformed into a hive of music and colour as the annual Atlantic Festival rolls into town. A unique event that incorporates the Madeira Music Festival, International Fireworks Festival and a series of classical music events at various venues across the city, the tranquillity is temporarily shattered in the nicest possible way.

The most explosive occasions occur on Saturday evenings for the duration of the festival, but pleasingly you can spend a week or so in the city and find something happening almost every day to keep you entertained. Our guide to the month of madness should give you some idea of what to expect!

Madeira Atlantic Festival: events and activities

Madeira Atlantic Festival: Fireworks Madeira Atlantic Festival: Fireworks

Make no bones about it – tourists flock to the Atlantic Festival, first and foremost, to witness the famous spectacle that is the weekly fireworks bonanza. In what can only be referred to as a pyromusical, teams from competing countries attempt to outdo one another with increasingly outlandish displays that illuminate the night sky against a backdrop of music from the nation in question. Each display lasts for around 20 minutes in the splendid setting of Funchal Harbour, where the best views can be enjoyed from the comfort of a boat.

Madeira Atlantic Festival: Music Festival Madeira Atlantic Festival: Music Festival

Secondary to the fireworks in terms of recognition – but certainly an equal in the entertainment stakes – is the Madeira Music Festival. This is one for appreciators of the classical genre, but on a par with the music are the magnificent venues in which the concerts are held. Architectural marvels such as the Convent of Santa Clara and Baltazar Dias City Theatre are given an entirely new dimension, as philharmonic orchestras, renowned composers and local choirs shake the foundations with rapturous melodies.

Madeira Atlantic Festival: Regional Arts Week Madeira Atlantic Festival: Regional Arts Week

Aside from the pyrotechnics and musical extravaganzas, the Atlantic Festival also embraces the area’s cultural heritage in a broader sense. The aim of Regional Arts Week is primarily to raise awareness of Madeira’s very own artistic geniuses to the wider world, implemented in the form of events such as garden parties, exhibitions, dance performances and painting contests. The wholehearted involvement of educational institutes from across the region lends the whole event a particularly pleasing atmosphere.

Madeira Atlantic Festival: Other Activities Madeira Atlantic Festival: Other Activities

Let it never be said that the Atlantic Festival is not a celebration of diversity – as testified by the broad range of ancillary events going on under its umbrella. Take the Regional Bread Fair, for instance. For some 20 years now, bakers have gathered in Funchal’s Largo da Restauração to sell their goods in the name of charity, as folk troupes amuse potential buyers. Elsewhere, you can enthusiastically involve yourself in the marches that take place in honour of the three “popular” Saints, namely Anthony, John and Peter.

Madeira Atlantic Festival: Funchal Madeira Atlantic Festival: Funchal

When the last firework has fizzled out, and the orchestra have placed down their bows, you could always stick around to explore the modest but beautiful city of Funchal. As far as capitals go, this is a real standout, resplendent in subtropical climates and breathtaking coastal landscapes. The best views of the city as a whole can be found in the Botanical Gardens, which are incidentally a mesmerising attraction in their own right. If you’re feeling brave, you can also embark on a cable car journey to Monte Palace gardens for a bird’s eye view.
