Dog holidaySky, hills and fells: that’s the Lake District for you. Throw in 12 of England’s largest lakes and 3,500km of trails and you’ve got the ultimate natural space; a haven of tranquility and an area of exceptional beauty. While most holidays call for leaving your pets at home, there really is no excuse for entrusting your dog to the neighbours if you’re heading to the Lake District. The area attracts hikers and explorers in their droves – many of whom explore the winding pathways with their faithful companion by their side.

Check in to a pet friendly holiday cottage and you’ll be free to traverse the hills and dales to your heart’s content. Even the most boisterous of dogs will be ready to kip after clambering to the summit of Catstye Cam and back to base. It’s not all about hiking and climbing of course: there’ll also be ample opportunity to kick back with an ale in one of the lakeside pubs while the dog dozes in front of the open fire. People; pets; cyclists; sailors: all are welcome within England’s greatest national park.

Pet friendly holidays in Kendal Pet friendly holidays in Kendal

The sleepy town of Kendal, with its historic buildings, bridges and traditional pubs, is an excellent base for your Lake District holiday. Famous for its mint cake – the fuel of ramblers and explorers – Kendal lies just nine miles from Windermere, where England’s largest lake marks the starting and finishing point of some truly excellent walks. Once you’re off the main roads, unleash your dog as you traverse the fells.

Pet friendly holidays in Keswick Pet friendly holidays in Keswick

Another small Lake District town, Keswick is a popular haunt with families. Kids will relish the tree-top adventure course at Whinlatter Forest Park, complete with zip wires and rope crossings. From a series of jetties at Keswick, a launch takes visitors across Derwentwater, stopping at various stages along the way. Hop on and hop off at will, exploring the inlets and coves that make up this Queen of English Lakes. At Newlands Adventure Centre, an array of outdoor activities await, from kayaking to archery; probably best if your pet sits this one out.

Pet friendly holidays in Penrith Pet friendly holidays in Penrith

Popular with tourists on account of its charming shops and cafés, Penrith offers a blend of traditional wares and contemporary pleasures, including its famous arcades. Make a point of visiting the ruins of Penrith Castle, which date back to the 14th century, and try to check out the grave of a legendary giant in St Andrew’s churchyard. The grave is encircled by four hogback stones, said to represent the wild boar that he killed in Inglewood Forest. Located in the Eden Valley, Penrith grants easy access to the River Eamont, the River Petteril and the River Lowther. Don’t be surprised if your dog takes a dip.

Pet friendly holidays in Windermere Pet friendly holidays in Windermere

Lake Windermere, a remarkable body of water, extends for ten miles and drops to 219 feet at its lowest point. Fertile territory, then, for divers, anglers and sailors, wooed by the gentle grey waters. Simple pleasures can be enjoyed in Bowness-on-Windermere, where you can lick an ice cream while watching the steamers depart from Bowness Bay. Rowing boats can be hired, though if you desire the full boating experience, hire a skippered luxury yacht. Private charters are available for groups of up to 11. And yes, of course you can bring your dog.

Pet friendly holidays in Eskdale Pet friendly holidays in Eskdale

The Eskdale Valley crams in enough sights and attractions to comfortably fill a fortnight’s holiday. Visit the Lake District’s last working corn mill, browse the charming art galleries and enjoy a hearty pub lunch in one of Eskdale’s seven inns. When you’re ready for adventure, follow the River Esk which winds its way to the sea from the top of the fells. Along the way, it grows from a gurgling brook to a fast-flowing river with sections of rapids that are flanked by rolling green hills. If you can persuade a member of your party to babysit your pet, a visit the World Owl Centre promises the opportunity to get up close with various species of owl – big eyes, feathers and all.
