Pretty scenery is nice. Interesting cities filled with museums and galleries are nice. Local produce, golden beaches and warm seas are all nice. But none of these things guarantee a good holiday if your accommodation's rubbish. Whether it's basic facilities, cramped rooms or an industrial view, a holiday home that fails to live up to expectations can put a real dampener on the trip.
Choose wisely then, and choose smart. Before you book your plane tickets and start pre-tanning (for some reason everyone tans before going on holiday), give some thought to where you're gonna stay. What would you like to come home to at the end of each day: a small apartment or a spacious villa complete with tennis court? OK, so that's probably a leading question; if money were no object, we'd all choose the latter. Thankfully, it is possible to enjoy the good life without dipping into your savings account. A villa with tennis court in New York? Yeah, that will set you back. A similar offering in Croatia? Surprisingly reasonable. Make your next holiday the best one yet by booking into a villa you'll be proud to call home, if only for a fortnight.

Villas with tennis courts in the Canary Islands
Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife: three islands that form the bulk of the Canaries, each with their own natural wonders and urban centres. Lively nightlife and quiet coves. Volcanic peaks and archipelagos. Fuerteventura's pristine beaches are hard to top, though the other Canary Islands may demur. Tenerife can claim the awe-inspiring spectacle that is Mount Teide as well as the unique volcanic rocks that pepper its national park. Lanzarote also gets in on the volcanic game, with the 7km Atlantida Tunnel the longest of its kind in the world. With the Canaries made for beach holidays, the islands' shores are ringed by villas with tennis courts, pools and all the other trappings that make a good holiday great.

Villas with tennis courts in the Dominican Republic
While the lures of the Caribbean need little by way of introduction, the Dominican Republic stands out on account of its family facilities and reasonable prices. It's a tropical paradise, but one that's within reach of regular mums and dads, not just hedge fund managers. Punta Cana is the island's prime resort, though for a quieter stay try booking a villa to the north. While the prospect of kitesurfing and windsurfing are enticing, there's also an endless supply of tennis to be had back at your villa. With so many activities to juggle, the beach will be lucky to get a look in. You'll find time for it somehow though.

Villas with tennis courts in Croatia
Croatia is a European destination that continues to go from strength to strength; the young flock there for its music festivals and glorious beaches at the height of summer, while the not-so-young head there for similar reasons, plus the lure of the verdant countryside that's ripe for cycling and hiking. The best beach resorts can be found along the Kvarner Riviera, whose sands have attracted European royalty for centuries. The most famous seaside resort lies at Opatija, a small but glamorous town that still wears vestiges of the Austro-Hungarian empire, when many of its grand houses were built. If you're craving a villa with that all-important tennis court, there are several fine candidates to pick from, dotted along the Croatian coast.

Villas with tennis courts in Turkey
Turkey has a turbulent past – not just militarily, but geologically too. Civilisations have came and gone and, long before them, rock formations have risen from the sea and been subsumed into it. Today, the nation's flora and fauna are protected by a series of national parks, many of which also house archeological treasures. Whether you prefer lakes, rivers or chasing waterfalls, there are water features galore, and that's not counting the Mediterranean Sea that laps against the so-called Turquoise Coast. Pick a beachfront villa to enjoy the best of all worlds: parks, beaches and historic cities. Oh, and the tennis. Mustn't forget that either.

Villas with tennis courts in Greece
Like Turkey, Greece isn't short of history. Its great civilisation may have have faded, but more than any other European state, this is a country that has shaped the world. With 6,000 islands and islets, Greece crams a lot of coast into a small space. Crete, Rhodes and Corfu are all worthy destinations for your beach holiday or tennis holiday or whatever you're billing it as. While most of the action will take place within earshot of the shore, it's worth nothing that this is a mountainous country – 80% mountainous to be precise. That's a lot of peaks to scale, but the reward, should you ascend the Pindus Mountain range, will be beautiful scenery for as far as the eye can see.
