2014 family holidays to the Algarve

Find and compare great family holiday accommodation in the Algarve on HomeAway

Sun, Sea and Family FunThe Algarve is the most beautiful region of Portugal, and perfect for families wanting to spend an incredible holiday on the beach; without all the tourist traps of the Mediterranean and a much more idyllic, unique holiday experience. Travel to the Algarve is cheap and the destination is beautiful beyond compare.

Family holidays in the Algarve have a huge amount to offer. There are sandy beaches and quiet coastal fishing villages, there are lively family oriented resort towns with plenty of family activities on offer, there is beautiful natural scenery from the coast to the rolling hills, and the whole area is awash with history and culture to enjoy. With that in mind we decided to look a little more closely at everything the Algarve has to offer families.

Where to Stay in the Algarve Where to Stay in the Algarve

Where to stay is always important for families, but the reality of the Algarve is that wherever you stay you’ll be within easy reach of family attractions, entertainments and the beaches. At only 160km x 50km you can’t really stay anywhere in the Algarve that is too far away from things you might want to see; though renting a car is a very good idea. You will most likely fly into Faro and this is a very nice place to stay but great resorts exist all along the coast.

The most popular are Lagos, Albufeira, Tavira, Quarteira and Luz but  you can find dozens of beautiful small towns with gorgeous beaches and a fantastic atmosphere. Portuguese culture is very welcoming of children and families so you can expect a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere wherever you are.

The Algarve Beaches The Algarve Beaches

The Algarve beaches are amongst the most beautiful in Europe and range from tiny rocky coves to vast sprawling sands. Being close to the beaches is great for families and the temperature is normally milder than the Mediterranean; though you will still need plenty of sun cream. At the larger resorts you will find lifeguards and cordoned areas of beach for swimming; so you can rest assured that your family is safe. Along the coast you can find more secluded spots that are incredibly beautiful; but you will need to keep a closer eye on younger family members. Few places in the Algarve are far away from magnificent beaches but three of the best are at Lagos, Vila di Bispo and Albufeira.

Outdoor Activities in the Algarve Outdoor Activities in the Algarve

For more adventurous family outings the Algarve has an incredible amount to offer. On the sands you can find all your typical beach fare from water skiing to surfing. Along the coast you can rock climb, abseil or simply stroll the beautiful coastal paths. Inland you have quad biking, climbing, mountain biking and a huge range of activities on offer.

However, one of our favourite activities in the Algarve is simply exploring the beautiful countryside. A 20 minute drive away from the coast takes you to beautiful hills, mountains and valleys. There are nature parks, forests and places where you won’t see a tourist for miles as you enjoy the Algarve at its idyllic finest.

There are dozens of waterparks along the coast, zoos, adventure play parks, nature trails and sea life excursions. The Algarve caters beautifully to children of all ages and beyond the beaches you will find hours of entertainment on offer. There are also great activities for teenagers and older family members from nightclubs to golf courses so you're whole family will be well catered for.

The History and Culture of the Algarve The History and Culture of the Algarve

The history of the Algarve is one of the most interesting in Europe, and for adults and children there are a lot of things to see, do and explore. The castles and fortresses lining the coast are incredible; from the Moorish castle at Silves to the sprawling walls of the charming Tavira, and the more modern fortifications at Castro Marim on the border with Spain. These incredible sites give you a deep insight into the history of the region and provide plenty of family friendly entertainment.

Beyond the incredible historical architecture the culture of Portugal, and the Algarve in particular, is well worth getting to grips with. The Portuguese bars, cafes and people generally will be warm and welcoming and you should spend some time chatting with locals and trying the incredible food on offer. The history of the Algarve is one of the most interesting in Europe, and for adults and children there are a lot of things to see, do and explore.
