Windermere and Central Lakes
Windermere is one of the most popular spots for Lake District family holidays, due in no small part to its wealth of attractions. Aside from the natural beauty of the area itself, there's so much to keep the little ones busy. Travel west of Windermere to find Coniston, where you can enjoy a ride on a Victorian steamboat or trek through Grizedale Forest: complete with a high-rope adventure park, it'll certainly keep the kids happy. Conversely, why not stay in Windermere itself, and enjoy a ride on the Haverthwaite Railway? If the sun's shining, you could always head for Fell Foot Park or Hill Top Farm in Sawrey: Beatrix Potter wrote her famous children's stories here, and there's an entire park dedicated to Peter Rabbit.

West Lakes and Cumbrian Coast
To the west of the Lake District you'll find the Cumbrian Coast, home to some of the region's best-loved sites and attractions. Take the little ones for a ride on the restored Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, and you'll travel from the coast, through the western lakes, and up to the region’s highest mountain. If you head north a little, you'll find the seaside port of Whitehaven, where the whole family is catered for: parents will love the exhibitions at the Beacon Gallery, whilst children will enjoy the Lake District Coast Aquarium. Of course, there are lots of ways to spend the day without buying tickets - traverse the Terrace Walk for spectacular views of Eskdale Valley, or hike through the wonderful Lakeland fells.

Penrith, East Lakes and Eden Valley
Penrith is located in the north-east of the region, and a great choice for Lake District family holidays. Brimming with activities and attractions, it's here you'll find Eden Ostrich World, where children can learn within a beautiful working farm. There are also dozens of parklands and stately homes to keep Mum and Dad entertained, such as Brougham Castle and its expansive gardens. Whilst animal sanctuaries and adventure parks will keep children amused, one attraction that can't fail to entertain is the Abbot Lodge Jersey Ice Cream Centre. A working dairy farm, you can meet Jersey cows, learn about ice cream, and sample the final product, of course!

When families hear the Lake District is home to some of England’s most spectacular scenery, they usually head for Windermere. Yet a less-frequented, but equally beautiful spot, is found in the south-western Lakes Peninsula. There's so much to see and do here, whether you want to hire a boat and head out to the lakes, or have fun at family attractions. Muncaster Castle is one of the area's best-loved sites, as it boasts the World Owl Trust and an adventure playground too. Once you've hopped off the antique railway which travels from Scafell to Ravenglass, you can discover beautiful birds housed in the castle's walled garden, of which there are over 49 species. Of course, there are also 70 acres of grounds to explore, as well as the allegedly haunted castle itself...
