Edinburgh foodie holidays Edinburgh is the perfect place for a short break and if you're a food lover, you'll be in heaven. It's a compact city steeped in history. The old town has towering 7-and 8-story buildings full of narrow passageways and parts of the original city wall dating back hundreds of years. The new town (started in the 1770s) has many elegant Georgian buildings, some of which are converted into Hotels. You'll find green, open spaces at every turn.
Edinburgh must be the only capital city that has a park running along one side of its main shopping street and of course we have our own extinct volcano, Arthur's seat that you can walk up after sampling the culinary delights. The city is so easy to get around. You can walk or buy a day's bus ticket for a very reasonable £3.50. Festivals are numerous, but come to Edinburgh any time of year and you'll find a very warm welcome from everyone you meet.

The gourmet highlights of Edinburgh

Eating out Eating out

The focus for many of our top chefs is the amazing Scottish produce. Locally sourced beef, pork and lamb are delicious additions to their menus. You'll find foraged ingredients alongside prime Scottish fruits and vegetables including raspberries, strawberries, asparagus and tomatoes. And of course, no menu would be complete without the freshest fish. Look out for langoustines, scallops, salmon, mackerel and oysters. For top-notch cooking, eat at Martin Wishart's Michelin Starred restaurant in the Leith area of Edinburgh. The service is exceptional. We recommend the vegetarian, fish or meat tasting menus. Our top tip: do your research and always book your restaurant table in advance, you'll be disappointed if you try to turn up on the night – locals love eating out.

Whisky and cocktails Whisky and cocktails

A phrase you'll often hear is “there's a whisky for everyone” and this really is true. Many of the bars and restaurants have a huge selection to try from with very knowledgeable staff. The experts will quiz you on the flavours you like and will find a malt that hits the spot. Cocktails are the ideal start to a great evening out. One of our favourite locations is Tigerlily on George Street.  You'll find shimmering mirrors and elegant chandeliers, plenty of touches of pink and comfy sofas. The friendly mixologists will create you the best cocktails in town with the freshest ingredients. An insider tip, Seek out the menu of cocktails at special prices.

Afternoon tea Afternoon tea

After all that walking round town, a proper afternoon tea is a must. Independent cafés all round town excel in providing really decent tea and proper cakes and scones baked on the premises. For a extravagant treat, drop into the Caledonian a Waldorf Astoria Hotel just seconds from the shops. Here you'll feast on dainty sandwiches and patisserie in the elegant surroundings of Peacock Alley. Our tip: choose a day when you're not eating a huge supper but they will pack up anything you don't eat take away.

Edinburgh's markets Edinburgh's markets

If you're visiting at the weekend, a trip to a food market is high on the agenda. You'll find plenty of opportunities to taste and sip, eat breakfast or take an early lunch. Edinburgh's Farmer's market is on every Saturday, but our top tip is to shop where the locals go, Stockbridge Market on a Sunday. Stockbridge is a thriving area of Edinburgh with many specialist shops, cafés and restaurants. The Market attracts a fascinating mix of producers selling everything from savoury Scotch Eggs to fresh pasta and sauces.

Chocolate, cheese and all things Scottish Chocolate, cheese and all things Scottish

It's always lovely to take something delicious home with you to remind you of your visit. Head along to Cranachan and Crowdie on the Royal Mile. Inside you'll find a true cornucopia of Scottish Food. Discover Scottish cheeses, including creamy Crowdie and tangy Isle of Mull Cheddar; cured meats and salmon, chutneys and sauces. Drinks include local beers, teas and juices. And of course there are always plenty of samples to taste. Top tip: Owners Beth and Fiona will package your purchases up safely for your homeward journey.
