Costa del Sol (Fuengirola)To many British holidaymakers, Spain is a reliable old friend. Think about it. The summer holidays are fast approaching and you’re beginning to think about getting away from it all for a week or two. Your top priority is to settle down on a beach and relax as much as is humanly possible. You want sun. Simply put, you already know that Spain ticks all of these boxes. As far as sun, sea and sand goes, you know exactly what you’re getting. This is precisely why Britons flock to Espana in their droves each and every year.

There are of course other benefits to holidaying in Spain. Aside from the cost efficiency, there is a raft of attractions and activities on offer to keep everyone happy during their visit. The Costa del Sol (aptly translated as “Sunny Coast”) on the south coast has a particular abundance of everything you could wish for in a holiday. Our whistle-stop quick will help you get started with just a handful of suggestions. When you’re set to book up, look no further than HomeAway to choose from a range of affordable Costa del Sol rental properties.

Malaga Malaga summer holidays

Even forgetting for a moment the subtropical climate that it boasts, the ancient city of Malaga is a historical goldmine rife with stunning architecture and cultural significance. If you’re an art lover, you’ll relish the chance to visit the Picasso Museum, a shrine to the celebrated painter in the town of his birth. Alternatively, you could soak up the Mediterranean rays on La Malagueta Beach.  Time your trip towards the end of the summer and you might even catch the annual fair that occurs in August. Throughout this period, the place comes alive with fireworks, floral displays and cultural shindigs.

Marbella Marbella summer holidays

The coastal resort of Marbella has undergone something of a transformation in recent decades. Once a sleepy Andalusian fishing village, the area has become a playground for the rich and famous. Thankfully, neither of these qualities are required to enjoy a visit here: there’s plenty to savour for those on a more realistic budget. Stroll along the harbour at Puerto Banus to witness a dazzling collection of millionaire yachts, sticking around after the sun goes down to take in the nightlife. If you’re travelling with kids, or even if you’re just a kid at heart, don’t miss out on the water sports, markets and amusement parks at Funny Beach.

Torremolinos Torremolinos summer holidays

Due west of Malaga lies the municipality of Torremolinos, a curious but mesmerising fusion of archetypal Spanish holiday sensibilities and historical significance. Archaeologists have found remains in the town dating back to the Neolithic age, with several Roman ruins also in the vicinity. Of course, the main draw for the ever-expanding tourist population is the beach. The best way to get there is via the Calle San Miguel, a bustling pedestrianised street lined with shops and tavernas. Be warned, though: the winding stairway at the bottom of the street is a slog to ascend after a hard day of lying in the sun.

Gibraltar Gibraltar summer holidays

OK, so it’s not on the Costa del Sol. Technically it’s not even in Spain. Regardless, the proximity of this curious territory makes it a worthwhile venture even if just for one day. There are plenty of operators who organise trips from nearby ports such as Malaga and Torremolinos, but it’s simple enough to get there under your own steam using public transport. However you reach the rock, be sure to explore the caves that lie within: some of them are labyrinths reminiscent of Dr Who’s TARDIS in their hidden depths. Gibraltar is a British Military stronghold, so there are certain areas that are off limits to tourists; by and large, though, you’ll be left to your devices with no fuss.

Benalmadena Benalmadena summer holidays

Benalmadena is yet another example of an archetypal Mediterranean community transformed almost beyond recognition by the tourism boom - in a largely beneficial manner, of course. Like its neighbours, you will find an elaborate allocation of bars, clubs, restaurants and beaches to while away the hours; but the scenery is also there to be admired in all its splendour. The best way to experience this is to hop on a Telecabina cable car to the top of the overlooking mountains, affording you a bird’s eye view over the town and stunning coastline. The amusement park Tivoli World, meanwhile, is a great day out for the family and is located in the very heart of Arroyo de la Miel.
