Top places to visit in Rhodes
Lindos is one of the prettiest villages in Rhodes, and a fantastic spot for enjoying some tranquil time away. Home to some of the most important landmarks on the island, it's also the destination of choice for those interested in the classical Greek history. An acropolis lies at the top of the village, and you'll find an amphitheatre, tomb and temple along the trail to the top. For a more relaxing afternoon, stroll through Lindos's cobbled streets - the only legal modes of transport are mopeds, bicycles and donkeys! - or admire the 'Captains' Houses', historic white-washed structures which date back to the 16th century.

Pefkos is a great choice for those in search of a secluded and beautiful spot in Rhodes. Peaceful and traditional, yet by no means cut off from the rest of the island, it's the perfect choice for couples and families. It's also one of the few destinations where you'll find a soft-sand beach, and its Blue Flag status ensures you'll find clean, unspoilt stretches where you can lie back and enjoy the sunshine. If you want to get active, there are a number of water-sports available: whether you want to try waterskiing or hire a pedalo for the day, you'll find no shortage of outdoor activities in Pefkos!

Rhodes Town is home to many of the island's most famous landmarks, and has long been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Amongst the most important are the Grand Master's Palace, a beautiful 15th century structure, and the Acropolis of Rhodes, which dates back over 2,200 years. The latter houses the Temple of Apollo and a well-preserved amphitheatre too, which date back to the Hellenistic period of Greece. Of course, it's not all about history when you holiday in Rhodes Town: there's a picturesque harbour where pretty fishing boats bob up and down, backed by dozens of traditional tavernas.

Located to the east of the island, Gennadi is a great base for exploring the eastern coast. From here, you can visit the spectacular Castle of Monolithos, which sits atop a rock 240 metres above sea level, or simply spend some time relaxing outside the tavernas of picturesque Apollakia. Rhodes Town is also within easy reach for a day trip, and there are dozens of bays where you can lie back and enjoy the sunshine. Of course, while Gennadi's a great place from which to get out and about, there's lots to enjoy in the village itself: its pretty beach, traditional restaurants and friendly locals make it increasingly popular, and it's tipped as an up-and-coming resort for fantastic nightlife.

As the second-largest town on the island, Ialysos has plenty to keep tourists entertained. Famous as the homeland of the ancient boxer Diagoras of Rhodes, the resort is possibly best known for its abundance of historical sites. The main town often goes by the name Trianda, and houses some amazing remains: as well as Minoan settlements and well-preserved Mycenaean cemeteries, the Temple of Athena Polias is certainly worth a visit. There's also a spectacular fountain-house, where statues of lions' heads spout water into an enormous pool, and more recent Byzantine and Medieval monasteries.

Free Things to Do: Beautiful Beaches and Marvellous Mountains
Rhodes is a fantastic destination for those seeking sun, sea and - well - gravel! Most of the beaches on the island lack familiar sandy stretches, but don't let this put you off: with over 300 days of sunshine a year, and a huge number of facilities for water-sports such as sailing, fishing and surfing, the shores of Rhodes are a great choice for families and groups of friends.
While you won't be building sandcastles any time soon, you will be able to find pristine, hidden bays where you can expect some well-deserved peace and quiet: the coast between Gennadi and Prasonisi is one of the best places to find it! If you want to get active, one of the most popular activities along the coast is snorkelling: there are lots of opportunities to do so, and the water offers great visibility.
Of course, if you'd rather head inland to enjoy outdoor activities, you'll find some magnificent mountains on Rhodes. One of the greatest challenges presents itself at Mount Attavyros, a peak which towers 1215 metres above sea level. Lying between Embonas and Siana, it initially offers a trail through low-lying vineyards, before presenting a steep, rocky climb to the summit. And if that all sounds like too much hard work, you can always drive up the dirt road to enjoy panoramic views from the top!
