Balearic IslandsThe Balearic Islands typify Spanish island life. While the sun drenches a landscape fringed by golden sands, you can enjoy a margarita on a leafy terrace, visit crumbling heritage sites or sample some of the best nightlife in Europe. There’s plenty to get up to whether you’re on Majorca, Ibiza or one of the other islands, and a welcome marriage of rural, beach and city life ensures that all visitors are made welcome. Lying off the eastern coast of the Spanish mainland, this archipelago of islands boasts a Pandora’s Box of attractions – and it needn’t cost you a bomb to enjoy them.

It’s easy to get dreamy when contemplating a holiday on the Balearic Islands; even the name conjures images of sugar-soft beaches, unspoiled villages, searing heat and sparkling aquamarine water. To ensure the holiday matches your fantasy, why not plan out your trip with the aid of a little research: will the resorts of Ibiza be too busy or loud, or is that what you’re going for? Are you concerned by contradictory hotel reviews? Renting your own villa or apartment is a great way to save money and obtain a little extra privacy. Balearic Island accommodation offered by HomeAway Holiday Rentals can provide the dream setting for the holiday of a lifetime. But which island will you visit? Here’s the shortlist.

Top five destinations for cheap Balearic Island holidays

Ibiza Ibiza

What is there to say about Ibiza that has not already been said? Chances are you know this island by its reputation, as the hedonistic club capital of Europe. Nightlife is centred around the edgy capital of Ibiza Town, the canyons of San Antonio and the blissed-out resort of Playa d’en Bossa, but there’s more to do here than party. Away from the club scene, the island is surprisingly rural, replete with groves and flower-dappled hillsides. Take a stroll along the cliffs from Cala d’en Serra and onto the lighthouse at Punta des Moscater on the island’s northern cape, or relax minus the hordes on the tiny cove beach of Cala Olivera.

Formentera Formentera

Perhaps the most understated of the four main Balearic Islands, venture to Formentera if you’re in need of relaxation. It’s a ferry ride from party capital Ibiza, but with its beachfront building ban and easy pace of life, they might as well be on different planets. Boasting a coastline of white-powder beaches, there is a happy, hippy vibe around the chiringuitos (bars), many of which are surprisingly cheap, and the weekly craft market in El Pilar is certainly worth a browse. The sea is incredibly clear here, so don’t forego a bit of snorkelling or diving, or rent a pushbike and take to the many well-worn scenic pathways crisscrossing the island. Bliss.

Menorca Menorca

Majorca’s smaller sibling, Menorca nonetheless has a charm and spirit all its own. Offering more than just beaches and bars – though it’s short of neither – the island is home to 1,600 megalithic sites for those keen to learn about its rich heritage. Get your fix of history at Fortress la Mola on the north side of Mahon harbour, before quenching your thirst at Binifadet Winery. Elsewhere, why not take a boat trip and explore various parts of the island’s coastline, spotting coves and beaches that are concealed from land? Alternatively, you can scour the terrain from a hired kayak – the sport is extremely popular here, and hire charges as a consequence aren’t too pricey.

Palma (Majorca) Palma (Majorca)

Stylish and cultured, the capital of Majorca is a city that thrums with life. Situated on the southern shores of the island, Palma stares fixedly over the twinkling sea of the Med, and is a haven for foodies, adventurers, shoppers and the typical sun, sea and sangria crowd! Here you’ll find Gothic cathedrals, a thriving art scene and a dizzying array of pavement cafes and hidden squares. For a great day-out, check out the bustling produce market at Mercat de S’Olivar, teeming with fruit stalls, or explore the village of Portixol close to Palma bay for a drink at Cocco’s rooftop bar.

Pollenca (Majorca) Pollenca (Majorca)

Nestled between two hills at the eastern edge of the Serra de Tramuntana, Pollenca retains the kind of pleasingly lazy charm the Balearics were once famous for. Café life is all around; come here to relax on a terrace with a palmetto fan and iced drink, pore over locally-crafted goods at the bi-weekly markets, or try out any number of contemporary Mediterranean dishes in the restaurants spreading out from Placa Major. After indulging, you can always burn the calories with a pleasant stroll or cycle in the foothills of the awesome Tranmuntana Mountains, or with some swimming at the blue-flag Alcudia Beach.
