HomeAway travel expert
Enough is made about the qualities that Central and Southern Europe hold as a holiday destination. Millions of tourists flock to Germany, Austria, Croatia et al in their droves each year, inspired by any number of travel shows on television, raving about their admittedly attractive attributes. Strange then that, by comparison, the bordering nation of Slovenia has gone relatively unheralded for so long. Even putting aside the fact that the country is a gem of culture and visual spectacles, those travelling on a budget may find it easier to control their expenditure here than in any of its counterparts.
Slovenia’s modest size means that, should you desire, the option to travel around and take in as much as possible would by no means break the bank. You may opt to do just that, or you might simply prefer to dock in one place for your stay: regardless of what you go for, HomeAway Holiday Rentals is always here to provide your accommodation from our wealth of cottages, villas and apartments. If you’re still unsure that Slovenia is the place for you, why not take a look at our brief guide to the country?
Top five attractions for a cheap holiday in Slovenia
Cheap holidays to Ljubljana
Search any guidebook you want: you won’t find any world famous attractions in Ljubljana; no instantly recognisable landmarks or iconic buildings. In all honesty, this only makes the place more endearing. The miniscule capital city is more acclaimed for its warmth and friendliness, not to mention an abundance of charming architecture. You can easily explore the area on foot, taking in sights like the Triple Bridge, Ljubljana Castle and the old town without shelling out for transport. And with the cost of entry to one of the many museums that populate the city centre rarely more than a few Euros, you’re never likely to find yourself at a loss for either cash or things to do.

Cheap holidays to Maribor
A former recipient of the prestigious European Capital of Culture award, Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia. Its presence at the heart of the noted Stajerska wine region means that it is understandably famed for its delicious local produce. Indeed, the oldest vine in the world can be found here at the Old Vine House, home not only to the 400-year-old root but also a detailed history of the wine growing heritage of the surrounding hills. The city’s Main Square is a central hub of activity, with the open marketplace and town hall a convivial and picturesque setting.

Cheap holdiays to Bled
The town of Bled itself is fairly inconspicuous, but the surrounding area is quite possibly the most beautiful vista in the whole of Slovenia. The vista in question, of course, belongs to the spellbinding Lake Bled. The crystal waters are engulfed by the mighty Julian Alps, with a fittingly quaint church jutting from a small island at the heart of the lake. High on the mountainside, you will find Bled Castle, a historical 17th-century stronghold that offers both a cultural fix and the best viewpoint of the wonderful terrain below. Don’t be put of by the name of the Hag’s Tooth caves, by the way; the 300m network is a fascinating and inexpensive place to spend a day.

Cheap holdiays to Portoroz
Slovenia doesn’t have much in the way of a coastline, so it probably isn’t the first place people think of when planning a beach holiday. Thankfully, what is lacking in quantity is more than rectified by the quality of Portoroz. This is the place to be for anyone who enjoys a more conventional seaside getaway, with lush sandy expanses, casinos and more bars and nightclubs than even the most seasoned party animal could grace over a week. If you prefer the more peaceful aspects of such resorts, you can always relax with a dip in the pleasantly calm waters of the Adriatic.

Cheap holidays to Postojna
Another port where the nearby attractions somewhat overshadow the town itself, Postojna can be found a mere hour from capital city Ljubljana. The reason that tourists tend to frequent the area is the famous Postojna Caves, where for a mere €18 you’ll be whisked through the otherworldly 20km network before you alight for a walking tour. More adventurous explorers can undertake the more challenging tour, but the standard venture should be more than sufficient. Another intriguing and visually striking attraction in the region is Predjama Castle, a medieval fortress that appears to be protruding from the caves which flank it.
