Montreal GPQuebec’s largest city, Montreal is full of surprises. Its winters are chilly, its summers warm and its people are even warmer. This multicultural metropolis has a bohemian vibe to it; everyone is made to feel welcome here, regardless of where they’re from or what they’re into. Montreal loves its music, lives for its festivals and adores its arts scene. Spend a few days here and you’ll soon start to reciprocate.

At the start of June, Montreal’s attention turns to the Gilles-Villeneuve racing circuit, a strip of asphalt encircled by water on all sides. This distinctive track has been the home of the Canadian F1 Grand Prix since 1978. Following the tragic death of French Canadian racing driver Gilles Villeneuve, the course was renamed in his honour. Take a trip to the Canadian Grand Prix and you’ll get to experience one of the world’s most unusual racing circuits in one of the world’s most unusual cities.

The Montreal circuit is located in an area of the city called Parc Jean-Drapeau. The island upon which it’s built is a man-made affair, originally constructed for Expo 67. Half of the track, from the hairpin turn all the way to the pit area, follows the Bassin olympique. This rectangular basin was constructed for the rowing and canoeing events at the 1976 Summer Olympics. The course record, incidentally, was set by Ralf Schumacher in 2004.

Montreal is a city that likes to have a good time; many seasoned Canadian travellers proclaim it to be their favourite city for nightlife. Alcohol is cheap and plentiful, with relaxed licensing laws enabling most bars to stay open till 3am. During the 2014 Grand Prix it will be the height of summer, when Montreal’s drinkers can be found hanging out on terraces, patios and decks in bars and venues across the city. Grab a glass and join in the fun.

When hunger pangs set in, Montreal presents no shortage of options. The more elegant cafés and bistros can be found at St-Laurent and St-Denis. Busier, but still deserving of your time and money, is Vieux-Montreal; Mechant Boeuf serves great steaks and ribs with skinny fries, though for its rooftop view alone, Suite 701 deserves a notable mention. Unsure what you fancy? Ask the locals for advice – they’re invariably happy to chip in with personal recommendations. Who needs a guidebook when there are so many friendly faces willing to point you in the right direction?
