Belgian GPThere are several reasons to visit Belgium, a fact that may surprise many given its modest dimensions; it is regularly overlooked when restless travellers cast their eyes over a map of Europe. In reality, the country has much to offer the most conscientious caller: a wealth of museums, stunning architecture, vibrant nightlife and a tantalising gastronomic culture, to name but a few. It's well worthy of a trip at any time of the year, but for Formula One enthusiasts, August is easily the most appealing time to set off.

This is, of course, when the Belgian Grand Prix rolls into town.

Perfectly poised in the middle of the F1 calendar, the Belgian Grand Prix occurs when the battle for the championship is truly taking shape. As such, it has become a firmly established favourite amongst fans and drivers alike, the breathtaking setting being another contributing actor towards the event’s esteem.

Belgian Grand Prix 2014: setting Belgian Grand Prix 2014: setting

Few racetracks across the globe can boast such a beautiful environment as the renowned Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. A stalwart within the Spa region since its construction in 1921, the circuit winds through the Ardennes, flanked by beautiful forested valleys. Drivers consider the course to be among the world’s most challenging, requiring every ounce of their skill to negotiate the notorious Eau Rouge section and the death-defying Blanchimont turn. Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel will be eager to retain his place on the winner’s podium this year, but even a man of his considerable talent will not find it easy.

Belgian Grand Prix 2014: ticketing Belgian Grand Prix 2014: ticketing

Many Formula One fans find themselves frustratingly priced out of attending the sport these days, but the cost of tickets really depends on how you want to view the action. If you wish to be close enough to smell the champagne from the winner’s podium, for example, a three-day pass in the Grandstand will set you back a princely £496. If you plan to attend only on the day of the race itself, your wallet will still be some £458 lighter. If, though, general admission suits you just fine, you can snap up a three-day pass for a far more reasonable £119.

Belgian Grand Prix 2014: schedule Belgian Grand Prix 2014: schedule

As ever, the advent of a Grand Prix doesn’t merely begin and end with the race itself. Rather, the occasion incorporates three days between 22 - 24 August, packed with activities to keep the fans happy in the last embers of summer. If you indulge in a three-day pass, you can be there to witness the competitors take to the track for the first time (this year at least), getting a feel for all the twists and turns before battling it out for pole position in the following day’s qualifiers. By the time the chequered flag is waved on Sunday, you’ll have taken in more than your share of petrol-fuelled thrills.

Belgian Grand Prix 2014: where to stay Belgian Grand Prix 2014: where to stay

Far from just being the hometown of fictional sleuth Hercule Poirot, the nearby town of Spa is the perfect area to base yourself throughout the days of the Grand Prix. Its unique setting within a valley in the Ardennes creates an instantly enchanting and picturesque environment, complemented splendidly by the historic cold springs that birthed the word “spa” as it’s commonly used today. Another feature of the town’s infrastructure, and one just as significant, is the grandiose Spa Casino. Built in the 18th century, the building is the oldest of its kind on the planet.

Belgian Grand Prix 2014: after the event Belgian Grand Prix 2014: after the event

If gambling and lazing in the springs isn’t your cup of tea, you may prefer to travel slightly further to the city of Liege, when all is said and done at the Grand Prix. Although Liege is primarily a hub of industrial activity, the combination of culture, nightlife and welcoming locals makes it more than agreeable. At the very heart of the city you’ll find the stunning Palace of the Prince-Bishops, as well as an underground Archeoforum, where you can feast your eyes on the ruins of ancient cathedrals and Roman remnants. If you think you can last the pace with the numerous students living there, Le Carre is by far the finest region to round it all off with a few nightcaps.
