Autumn beach holidays in Cyprus
Its southerly position makes autumn in Cyprus a baking-hot season, with temperatures frequently pushing into the 30s: ample reason to sample the delights its beaches have to offer. Head for the stretches of sand around Agia Napa and Protaras, on the island’s east coast, and if you’ve got the kids in tow make a beeline for the shallows of Makronissos Beach. Whether you like your beaches replete with powder-fine white sand, hidden in coves or backed by sea-caves, Cyprus has got it covered. Konnos Bay is an intimate spot favoured by locals, and you’re unlikely to see water as clear as in the dreamily-named Fig Tree Bay. Grab a cold refreshment at one of the beachside tavernas, pitch up under a parasol and feel your stresses ebb away.
Autumn beach holidays in Sharm El Sheikh
Once a gentle fishing village, Sharm El Sheikh, on the southern tip of Egypt’s Sinai peninsula, is now famed as a tourist hotspot popular with sun worshippers from all over the globe. Despite its increasing popularity, delay your visit by a couple of months and you can enjoy comparative tranquillity during your time by the Red Sea. The azure waters and diverse array of marine life that inhabit them are a dream come true for even the most intrepid snorkelers and scuba divers. Alternatively, simply soak up the Middle Eastern climate on one of the many shimmering expanses of sand that comprise the coastline: start on Naama Bay’s gently shelving beach and work your way north, towards Nabq Bay.
Autumn beach holidays in Cancun
This Mexican resort has gained something of a reputation in more recent years - that of the raucous party hub, packed to the rafters with American students revelling in Spring Break festivities. Visit during the off season, though, and you’re sure to experience only the finer points of the coastal retreat. Famed for its white sandy beaches and glistening blue waters, Cancun is a relatively quiet town when the tourist throngs dissipate in the latter months. You may find that you have no desire to stray from the beach: but if you do, make sure it is to visit the fascinating Mayan pyramid at nearby Chichen Itza.

Autumn beach holidays in Goa
India, on the whole, is known more as a spiritual hub than the type of destination you’d associate with a beach getaway. The province of Goa, however, is something of a black sheep compared to the rest of the country. The area lies on the west of India, with the Arabian Sea providing a gloriously serene and beautiful landscape along the coastline. Arambol is perhaps the cream of the crop, a bohemian oddity largely populated by ageing hippies and seasonal travellers looking to find themselves on the majestic shores. Such is the searing heat throughout the peak season, autumn is the perfect time to visit to experience a more pleasant climate. It being Goa, the sunbeds and umbrellas are dirt cheap to rent: head for the remote and deserted Polem Beach for a truly unique experience. Lined with high palm trees and characterised by rocky headlands, it’s back to the basics - and all the better for it.

Autumn beach holidays in the Bahamas
The term “paradise” is used far too readily when people gush about beach holidays. All the more reason to celebrate when you stumble upon somewhere genuinely deserving of the title: the Bahamas. North Beach on Eleuthera, in particular, is notable for its uninterrupted three-mile stretch of pink, soft sands set against a dramatic Atlantic backdrop. Great Guana Cay is another magnificent option, popular amongst holidaymakers for the quaint bars situated atop the sand dunes overlooking the beaches below. Nassau can hardly lay claim to having the nicest beaches on the islands, but if nightlife is your thing the capital city is virtually unrivalled.
