Austrian GPAustria is a mysterious land of dense forests, snow-covered mountains, rushing rivers and time-weathered alpine towns. For many visitors, the country is synonymous with winter sports; every year, its slopes become interwoven with ski and snowboard trails as Europe’s powder monkeys compete to see who can rush downhill fastest, jump highest and perform the wildest tricks.

Not all of Austria’s sporting action takes place upon a thick carpeting of snow, however. Head here in June and there’s only one major event that people will be talking about – the Formula One Grand Prix. Held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, the weekend event is set to attract huge crowds from across Central Europe. Like its neighbour Germany, Austria loves motorsport, with the Grand Prix sure to be the highlight of the calendar year.

While Austria has long been a motor racing stronghold, it hasn’t always hosted the Grand Prix. The last F1 GP took place in 2003, when Michael Schumacher claimed a new course record. A decade later, the Austrian Grand Prix is set to be reborn for 2014 at the Red Bull Ring. The track follows the same layout as the A1-Ring, as the circuit was previously known, characterised by long, sweeping corners and a tight midsection.

With the Austrian GP back on track following a lengthy hiatus, tickets for the 2014 race are in high demand. Weekend grandstand tickets and Sunday tickets have sold out through many vendors. Some online retailers are still offering tickets though these may be at a premium. Check availability prior to booking your flights. Limited tickets should be available on the day of the race, but again, the price of these will be significantly higher.

Away from the racecourse, there’s no shortage of things to see and do in the Austrian countryside. The country’s tall mountain peaks attract hikers and rock climbers during the summer months, while its calm lakes can be fished by boat. Austria’s Carinthia region is popular with cyclists, whose uphill endeavours are rewarded by the prospect of free-wheeling past Alpine meadows and down mountain passes that extend for as far as the eye can see.

2014 Austrian Grand Prix: food and drink 2014 Austrian Grand Prix: food and drink

Austria’s most famous culinary creations are its pastries, with Vienna being the city where gourmands can sate their cravings for all things sweet, sticky and flaky. Sachertorte, Gugelhupf, Apfelstrudel; so sweet, so delicious. Man cannot live on cakes alone of course – thankfully, the country boasts some fine restaurants that combine Mediterranean cuisine with local staples, washed down with excellent wine and a fine selection of Austrian beer. Drinking isn't mandatory in Austria but it's highly recommended.
