Melbourne is a city that doesn’t do things by halves. Weekend-long festivals under the stars; huge sporting events; national surfing competitions; chic shops and historic arcades. Full of colour and full of life, Melbourne is a fun-loving city that doesn’t know when to stop.
Take a trip down under in March 2014 and Melbourne will be even louder than usual. On this occasion, the noise will owe less to the people – although they’ll be there in their droves – and more to the roar of a dozen highly tuned racing machines. From 13 - 16 March, the Formula One Grand Prix comes to Melbourne, bringing with it big names, big engines and big parties. Strap in and prepare for the mother of all weekends.
Australian Grand Prix 2014: everything you need to know
2014 Australian Grand Prix: setting
Albert Park is located to the south of Melbourne within a beautiful expanse of parkland. Artificial lakes, corners of varying speeds, two chicanes, numerous overtaking zones and roadways that pass through cricket fields are all part of the F1 experience. Getting there from the centre of Melbourne couldn’t be easier, with shuttle trams depositing racing fans close to the circuit. A free shuttle bus will also operate between Crown Casino and Gate 1 at peak times on race day.

2014 Australian Grand Prix: ticketing
The Albert Park street is as popular with Melbourne’s racing fans as it is with the drivers who negotiate its long straights and tight corners. Visitors who purchase general admission tickets to the GP can witness the racing action from various vantage points along the route, plus all the pre- and post-race entertainment. If you want to make a great day an incredible one, however, upgrade to the Turn 15 Premium Zone package. This includes an enviable view of the Grand Prix, access to a large 360º bar, full catering and space to hang out with your mates in a plush, spacious environment.

2014 Australian Grand Prix: entertainment
Away from the high-speed action at Albert Park, there’s a whole city waiting to be explored. By the time the racing’s wound down, you’ll have missed most of Melbourne’s cultural attractions, but not to worry – the nightlife will take over and carry you all the way through till morning. Head into the city centre and take a stroll down its wide boulevards that are lined with bars, clubs and restaurants. Melbourne has a great live music scene, with jazz, blues and rock acts tearing up the local venues every night of the week. Notable nightspots include Bella Union, Billboard Nightclub and Boney, which is open till 7am most weekends.

2014 Australian Grand Prix: activities
If you’ve got a spare day after catching the F1 GP, why not fit in a spot of shopping? Arguably Australia’s best shopping city, Melbourne will furnish you with all the sporting goods, gifts, fine art, ceramics and books you could conceivably cram into a suitcase. Take a trip to Melbourne Central and explore the QV and GPO precincts that are stocked with big name brands, independent retailers and bijou boutiques selling one-of-a-kind outfits. For sheer style, The Block Arcade is a must-visit, its lofty glass canopy and intricate mosaics sure to turn heads just as much as its daring attire.
