American cars are big and brash. They guzzle petrol. They're left-hand drive. They're automatic. In short, they're everything that British cars are not. While the aesthetics of US automobiles may leave something to be desired, there's no disputing America's love affair with the car. The nation's network of highways and interstate roads, the setting for the quintessential road trip, are very familiar to Europeans – even those of us who've yet to cross the Atlantic.
Raised on a diet of Hollywood movies, serial killer documentaries and state-jumping travelogues, we know all about America's love affair with the open road and the open top. It's no surprise that the F1 Grand Prix – the pinnacle of motor racing – should be such an extravagant event in the US. The modern Formula One car bears scant resemblance to the average American road car – and thank goodness for that. Texan fans don't discriminate though: they love all forms of motor racing, whether it's rally, Nascar or F1. In November 2014, over 100,000 of them will make their way to the Circuit of the Americas racetrack for the US Grand Prix. Why not join them and take your place at the greatest motor racing party in the West?
Austin powers the US Grand Prix
The F1 circuit at Austin
Circuit of the Americas might just be the most patriotic name ever conjured, but that's to be expected: no one's disputing that Texas epitomises the authentic all-American experience. Sure, the East Coast has attitude and the West Coast has California, but Austin is where you'll find the country's beating heart. Whether you love America, tolerate it or feel distinctly antipathetic towards it, all motor racing fans would have to agree that Circuit of the Americas is one hell of a racetrack. The 5.5km circuit first hosted the F1 GP in 2012; ever since, Texan fans have been smitten by this exquisite track with its hairpins, blind corners and long, fast downhill.

Schedule for the F1 US Grand Prix
The US Grand Prix may straddle two months, but it lasts for just 72 hours, running from Friday 31st October till Sunday 2nd November 2014. There's an insane amount of action to cram into the weekend, and that's not including the action that'll be taking place away from the racetrack. The official programme sees two practice sessions on the Friday, at 10am and 2pm respectively, followed by a final session at 10am on Saturday morning. Qualifying starts three hours later, with the race commencing at 2pm on Sunday.

Ticketing for the F1 US Grand Prix
Ticket prices for the F1 Grand Prix range from reasonable to "How much!?" – standard GP fare then. The cheapest seats can be found in the grandstands situated at turns 4, 5, 9 and 11E, with a weekend pass priced at less than $400. Turns 12 and 15 are mid-priced ($600-800), with the best seats reserved for the main grandstand, while a Club Level weekend past costs around $1,400. With 20 turns and a steep uphill leading to the track's signature hairpin corner, there are plenty of vantage points from which to catch the action at Circuit of the Americas.

2014 US Grand Prix: Austin music
Away from the live racing, there's plenty of other live action to occupy your holiday in Austin. The legendary SxSW festival which takes place each spring is by no means the city's only musical highlight – Austin eats, breathes and sings music in all its myriad forms. Blues; jazz; folk; rock; indie: it's all here in the self-proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World. Best venues? Try Elephant Room, Brass House or Firehouse Lounge for size. If you're not feeling the vibe, just head to the next bar to discover the best band you've never heard – or a pretty good approximation of one at least.

2014 US Grand Prix: Austin nightlife
Austin's live music scene may be huge, but if you hate guitars with a passion, not to worry: there are enough club beats and noisy bars here to suitably soundtrack your evening. Whether the club is your second home, or merely a means of extending the drinking into the wee hours, Austin boasts surprisingly diverse nightlife: sample seafood on the patio at Shoreline Grill while you watch bats flutter under the Congress Avenue bridge – the spectacle is less eery, more enchanting. Later, catch the best nightlife downtown at Continental Club, Antone's or Elysium Nightclub.
