Singapore GPLocations don’t get much grander than the Sovereign state of Singapore; a city whose rather literal English translation is the "Lion City", a moniker it has been given for good reason! Singapore is a city full of very tall skyscrapers, bustling harbours and labyrinthine streets brimming with activity. Despite it being one of the most urbanised and populated landscapes in all the world, Singapore is home to a great many heritage parks and nature reserves, beautiful areas from which you will return to your abode drunk with beauty.

This year's event, like 2013’s when Sebastian Vettel claimed his third consecutive victory, promises to be a good one. Upwards of 250,000 people are expected to migrate to the Marina Bay Street Circuit over the duration of the three-day race weekend, which runs from the 21 - 23 of September. So if you do plan to witness this most spectacular event, you’re best to secure accommodation at your earliest possible convenience.

Marina Bay, located in the southern part of Singapore, will undergo four months of work to ensure the twisting and meandering city streets may, for one weekend, transform into one of the slickest and most modern race tracks on the Formula One calendar. It’s said that one of the rather curious draws of this particular event is that it is the only Formula One race which is held at night; Jenson Button, for this reason, described it as "a unique spectacle".

As expected, tickets for this event are by no means inexpensive – the most agreeably priced three-day pass clocks in at a smidge under £150. If your budget does, however, permit for such heady pleasures as a clear view of the finishing line – and access to all of the amenities – expect to pay the princely sum of £300. Single day walkabout tickets are also available at varying prices, giving racing fans the flexibility to sample the event somewhat à la carte.

2014 Singapore Grand Prix: schedule 2014 Singapore Grand Prix: schedule

As I suspect you already know, the event is split into three separate days, in which the first is dedicated to two practice sessions commencing at six in the evening. This setup permits the drivers the chance to familiarise themselves with the unforgiving spotlight-lit streets of the city, before jostling for pole position in the following day's qualifiers. On the Sunday, the Grand Prix will begin in earnest at eight in the evening, just in time for darkness to descend over the track.

2014 Singapore Grand Prix: after the race 2014 Singapore Grand Prix: after the race

Singapore's nightlife is all things to all people; young and old alike are made to feel welcome. If your idea of a getaway is a relaxing and chilled-out affair, there are a myriad of delightful pubs in which you will be made to feel right at home. Amongst these is Night and Day, a popular bohemian watering hole populated by would-be musicians, artists, poets and writers alike. If, though, you’d prefer a bit of hustle and bustle about your evening, you can’t go wrong at Eski Bar, Orgo, Loof, or for the beer connoisseurs among you, Paulaner Bräuhaus, Singapore's very first German microbrewery.

No visit to a foreign country can be considered complete without sampling its finest native dishes; besides, I dare say you may require something to alleviate the next day's hangover... A rendezvous at The Cathay Restaurant will more than likely cure what ails you, by serving up traditional Cantonese speciality cuisine and ice-cold drinks at almost all hours of the day. There's also an entire street known as the Chinatown Food Street, dedicated as you might gather to ad-hoc noodle kiosks and outdoor restaurants, all of which offer a diverse spread of local delights.
