Tivoli GardensWhen people think of Scandinavia, most will automatically picture icy landscapes and subzero temperatures. As such, countries like Denmark are all too often overlooked as a first choice for a summer getaway. Those who do a little more in the way of investigation, however, will realise that, for the most part, the Nordic countries enjoy their share of sunshine during the peak season. And with Denmark’s peninsula-like protrusion into the North Sea, its coastlines are blessed with a panoply of beautiful beaches.

Of course, it’s not all about sun and sand. A summer holiday requires more substance to keep everyone entertained for a week or two, and fortunately in Denmark you’ll find precisely that. You can start to decide if this is the destination for you by taking a look at our quick guide to some of the finest attractions the country has to offer. When your mind is made up, there’s no need to look any further than HomeAway to find your dream Danish rental property.

Beaches Summer holidays in Denmark: best of the beaches

As mentioned, the vast expanse of coastline that surrounds Denmark is a haven of divine beaches. The Jutland region in particular is something of a hotbed, popular amongst residents and visitors alike due to its concentration of beaches and holiday friendly atmosphere. The west coast, meanwhile, is popular amongst watersport enthusiasts and it’s affectionately known as Cold Hawaii - for obvious reasons. The sands of Tisvildeleje are regarded as a more upmarket choice, but its irresistible bars, restaurants and cafes make it ideal for whiling away the hours as you relax.

Copenhagen Summer holidays in Denmark: visiting Copenhagen

The old ditty describes it as a “salty old queen of the sea”, but in truth the Danish capital is now a vibrant, modern and multicultural city. The beauty of Copenhagen is its modest size. Everything is compact, meaning that aside from being so simple to navigate, all aspects of culture and heritage rest side-by-side in blissful harmony. The iconic Round Tower that sits in the heart of the city is a great vantage point for scoping out your surroundings, as is the tower in the historic zoo. If the weather holds out, don’t miss the chance to indulge in a boat cruise through the picturesque canals and harbours.

Roskilde Summer holidays in Denmark: visiting Roskilde

Located not too far from Copenhagen, on the island of Zealand, lies the historic capital of Roskilde. The town is laden with cultural and architectural gems, not least the domineering cathedral that has been the burial place of kings and queens in centuries gone by. The Viking Museum, as you’d expect, gives a fascinating insight into the famed battles waged on this land during the Viking Age. Time your visit accordingly and you can also visit the Roskilde Festival, a week-long extravaganza that offers a staggeringly diverse range of musical acts. This year, for example, saw Metallica, Rihanna and Kraftwerk take to the stage in front of over 100,000 revellers.

Odense Summer holidays in Denmark: the Odense

Situated on the island of Funen, Odense is one of the great unheralded gems of Denmark and indeed Scandinavia as a whole. A charming mix of quaint old settings and eminent nightlife, the town is unique amongst its immediate peers. The old quarter is a colourful area, with pictorial pastel-adorned buildings lining the cobbled streets. This is also where you’ll find the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, the celebrated 19th-century writer behind fairytale classics such as "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling". Andersen is a prominent figure throughout Odense, with statues and monuments devoted to him scattered around. Stroll through his old haunts, it’s easy to spot the inspiration for some of his outlandish yarns.

Fano Summer holidays in Denmark: visiting Fano

This tiny island is arguably the most unique patch of land in the whole of Denmark. Separated from the mainland by the 5km stretch of the Wadden Sea, Fano is a pleasingly remote and peaceful environment, despite its popularity amongst a selection of intrepid tourists each year. As you would probably expect on an island, the beaches are the main attraction - but you can also lose yourself amidst the heath and the pine forest. Relaxation and tranquillity are very much the order of the day on Fano, so if you’re looking for a wild night, this isn’t the place for you.
