Incline Village is a small resort on the north shore of beautiful Lake Tahoe. Popular during the winter months as a ski resort, the area is also ideal for touring, hiking and cycling during the summer months. Lake Tahoe has clear, blue waters and is edged with small communities and grand estate homes. Mountain peaks, often snow-covered, surround this natural lake. Boat trips, canoeing, sailing and water sports are popular pursuits and waterfront restaurants take full advantage of the striking scenery.
There is plenty to see and do in the area throughout the year. Vegas-style casinos and theatres can be found on the Nevada side of the lake, and luxury spa resorts and championship golf courses abound.
The area around Lake Tahoe and Incline Village is geared towards skiing and snowboarding. Diamond Peak has one of the longest vertical drops in California at 2.5 miles long. Heavenly Mountain and Squaw Valley are larger ski areas but are further from your Incline Village holiday cabin.
The scenic coastal drive around Lake Tahoe on the 2-lane highway meanders through each small village and cove with an ever-changing backdrop of mountain scenery. The trip is 95 miles long and you can take all day over the journey, stopping at scenic lookouts for photographs and refreshments.
On the California side of Lake Tahoe are several wineries and there are many organized tours from your Incline Village accommodation to the vineyards to learn about wine making and then taste the finished product.
The moderately difficult trail goes to the Upper and Lower Eagle Falls and has spectacular scenery and views over Emerald Bay. After the walk, swimming is possible beneath the falls.
Thunderbird Lodge is on the National Register of Historic Sites and is on the east shore of Lake Tahoe, just 3 miles from your Incline Village accommodation. The only way to access this lovely stone built estate is on an organized tour, but it is well worth booking. Built between 1935 and 1940 the lodge is known for its craftsmanship and the idiosyncratic features of the owner, George Whitell, who cut secret tunnels through the solid granite rock to the boat house. The lodge is named after the fabulous yacht, Thunderbird, which was built in 1939.
Stuck in a time warp of the 19th century mining boom in the area, this town is a must-see experience. The mansions, churches, cemetery, opera house and gambling dens were built for those who went from poor man to millionaire almost overnight. The town declined as rapidly as it grew once the rich seams of gold and silver were depleted, leaving a fascinating place to visit.
The weather around Incline Village is very pleasant all year round. Even during the winter season, daytime temperatures rise above freezing and the summer months are hot and dry with average highs around 27°C (80°F).
