The small resort town of Honokowai, also known as Napili-Honolowai, has around 7,000 inhabitants in a beautiful location on the far west side of Maui. It is a less well-known destination where visitors can still witness the traditional way of life on Maui.
Honokowai holiday rentals are just north of the town of Lahaina, with a narrow beach and good snorkeling between the two reefs. Sunbathing and other watersports can be enjoyed in the area along with ball games and local sports played on the grassy park beside the beach. Kaanapali is just along the coast and is slowly developing, with several luxury resort hotels spread along the edge of the mile-long beach. Go shopping in the Whalers Village shopping centre in Kaanapali to pick up cheap souvenirs and local handicrafts. Golf can be played nearby on the Royal Kaanapali Golf Course just 2 miles south of Honokowai or at the Kapalua Golf Club. It is a couple of miles north and hosts the PGA Tour Mercedes-Benz Championship each January.
The better-known resort of Lahaina is just 5 miles south of Honokowai holiday rentals, which is where you can find grocery stores, restaurants and various local attractions. With its historic buildings and good shopping it is described as the “Jewel of the Crown of Maui”. The huge Banyan Tree spreads across a whole block and is the centre of the town. Old Lahaina is a great place to attend an authentic luau with Hawaiian food, hula dancing and fire dancing. You can also take a whale-watching cruise from Lahaina or join an exciting fishing expedition. The Baldwin Home Museum has some local history and the Lahaina Cannery Mall is a pleasant air-conditioned mall to escape the heat.
Honokowai holiday apartments experience warm summers reaching 90°F (32°C) in July and August. Temperatures do not vary a great deal in Maui throughout the year. Average daily highs in January are a very pleasant 81°F (27°C). The driest months for rainfall are May to September but light showers are still possible. The area has around 9 hours of sunshine per day, making it a beautiful place to stay at any time of year.
The nearest airport serving Honokowai holiday rentals is Kahului (OGG) International Airport on the north side of the island, about 33 miles east of Honokowai. Most major American Airlines fly to Kahului along with Air Canada, WestJet and Hawaiian Airlines. Visitors can rent a car and drive along the Honoapiilani Highway (route 30) which takes about 40 minutes, or get a taxi. There is also Kapalua (JHM) Airport, a domestic airport which is just a mile outside Honokowai. Alternatively, some visitors arrive by cruise ship from San Francisco or Seattle.
