The town of Hersonissos is 25 km east of Heraklion, situated between Anissaras and Stalis in one of the most colourful and cosmopolitan tourist areas of the island of Crete. As well as its sandy beaches, Hersonissos has a port which is busy year round. The town is actually made up of several small villages: Koutouloufari, Piscopiano, Anissaras, Potamies, Avdou, Gonies and Kera.
It is hard to beat the beautiful coastline and beaches around Hersonissos holiday rentals. Visitors can enjoy the fine sands and warm crystal clear waters for swimming, boating, snorkeling and watersports. After dark the harbour area lights up and there are many bars, restaurants and tavernas lining the beach offering plenty of local nightlife. Cruises from the harbour are very popular and go to the neighbouring island of Dia and other small islets and beaches in the area. The town has many shops, mostly geared to selling tourist souvenirs, clothes and jewellery.

The Hersonnissos Aquarium provides some interesting exhibits and the CretAquarium in Gournes. The more traditional villages of Koutouloufari, Piskopiano and Ano Hersonissos offer the chance to discover the local side of Crete along with the archaeological sites of Polyrenia and Falassarna and the Gorges of Topolia. The port town of Kissamos Chania with its old city walls makes an excellent day out from your Hersonissos holiday home. Frangokastello is one of the most well-visited landmarks on the island of Crete. It is in a scenic location and is famous for its 13th century castle which is still in remarkably good condition. Every year a festival on May 17 celebrates the strange phenomenon seen at dawn when the ghostly “Drosoulites” figures appear as a mirage for about 10 minutes.

The island is refreshed by the seasonal breezes in July and August. Rainfall during the summer is minimal with some showers from November to March. The nearest international airport serving Hersonissos holiday rentals is the Heraklion Airport in north central Crete, about 25 km away. Cheap flights from Thomsonfly are regularly available from Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, East Midlands, Glasgow, London (Gatwick and Luton) Manchester and Newcastle. Jet2 flies from Leeds/Bradford and Budgetair has flights from Cork, Dublin and Shannon to Heraklion (Iraklion). Flights can also be taken to Athens (ATH) International Airport and there are regular ferries from Pireas to Rethymno and Heraklion.
