Gruissan is a small town and beach resort on the French Riviera. Situated against the backdrop of a National Park, and almost halfway between Perpignan and Montpellier, Gruissan offers much more than just a beach holiday, with plenty of other activities on offer in the area. A self-catering holiday home in Gruissan offers the ideal base from which to explore the town and the surrounding countryside, with its historic castles, sandy beaches and famous wineries.
Many of the summer visitors to Gruissan prefer to spend their holiday relaxing at the beach, and this is certainly a good option. Visitors to Gruissan can explore the Old Town, with its well-preserved historic buildings and churches. Regular markets held in this area of Gruissan are the ideal place for self-catering holidaymakers to stock up on fresh local produce, as well as pick up a few local souvenirs.
The New Town in Gruissan also has numerous restaurants where visitors can enjoy dished featuring fresh local seafood and traditional French favourites.
Less than an hour’s drive from Gruissan is Perpignan, with its Gothic architecture, museums of folk art and agriculture and North African restaurants. This makes a great day trip from Gruissan for visitors looking to explore the area or do some shopping.
In the other direction is Montpellier, which has lots to keep the family entertained, including a zoo, a dinosaur park and museum and farmers markets, making for another great day trip.
Gruissan has a climate typical of the French Riviera, with long hot summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures reach up to 30C with very little rain, which is the main reason the area is so popular with summer holidaymakers. Winters temperatures still reach above 10C most days, with relatively little rain, which also makes Gruissan a great place for a winter break.
Gruissan is served by Perpignan Airport (PGF), which is 75km north along the coastline. Gruissan Airport receives daily flights from the UK operated by Air France, Ryanair, Flybe and bmibaby.
