Exuma is the name for a group of over 360 islands in the Bahamas, of which Great Exuma is the largest and one of only several which have permanent residents and holiday accommodation. With year-round warm weather, beautiful sandy beaches, clear warm waters and a laid-back, friendly atmosphere, the Bahamas is the dream holiday destination for many, and a visit to Great Exuma takes you away from the main island and onto a small and peaceful paradise isle.
Great Exuma is the largest of the cays of Exuma, covering 60km from end to end. Georgetown is the largest city on Great Exuma, and where most of the self-catering accommodation on the island is situated. Georgetown is a bustling and charming Caribbean city that has friendly locals and the best amenities on Great Exuma, with several shops, banks, restaurants and small supermarkets to be found. Even if you are not staying in Georgetown, this is the place to stock up on food and supplies for the duration on your stay.
Water sports are popular all over the Bahamas, but particularly so on Great Exuma. Sailing, scuba diving, yachting, snorkelling and many other water activities can all be easily arranged. Exuma is famous for Blue Holes – underwater vertical caves which attract stunning sea creatures such as Giant Rays and Turtles. It is also possible to hire a powerboat and head off to explore some of the many other cays of the Bahamas.
Great Exuma is linked to Little Exuma by a small bridge, which is the second largest cay of Exuma, has some excellent beaches and is another must-see.
There are many more cays to explore in Exuma. Sandy Cay was the filming location for the beach scenes in the film Pirates of the Caribbean, Staniel Cay is home of a large yacht club, and several of the smaller cays are owned by celebrities such as Nicolas Cage and Johnny Depp. A visit to some of the other Bahamian islands is also a must, with the capital of the island Nassau and beach-laden Eleuthra particularly strong recommendations.
Great Exuma is a year-round destination, with warm, sunny weather during every month, and top temperatures of around 33C. June to November is the wet season, so there is a storm risk during these months, but this is unlikely to ruin your holiday and rental prices are generally cheaper during this period to compensate.
Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) is the largest airport in the Bahamas, and situated near Nassau. British Airways and Thomson Airways both operate direct flights from the UK. Those staying on Great Exuma can then get a connecting flight to Exuma International Airport (GGT), which is located in Georgetown.
