Lying just about perfectly centre on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas is the sleepy town of Governor’s Harbor. Deemed to be the first landing place of the English settlers, The Eleutherian Adventurers, Governor’s Harbor is the ideal location to have a luxurious rental villa as a base. If you are looking for rest and relaxation with a few activities available, should you feel energetic, then a Governor’s Harbor holiday is the absolute perfect option for you. Full of history and tradition, the town is one of the best places on the island to experience the “real Eleuthera”.
Governor’s Harbor is as yet unaffected by mass tourism and so there are fewer activities to choose from than other islands in The Bahamas. That said, you cannot miss the wonderfully clear, sparkling water of the sea set against beautiful pinkish sand in Governor’s Harbor. This is the perfect spot for a bit of sunbathing or to indulge in some watersports such as sailing, snorkelling and surf fishing. Other activities available in Governor’s Harbor include horse riding, walking and bird watching. The stunning scenery of the town is perfect for those who love photography or painting.
To the north of Governor’s Harbor are The Hatchet Bay Caves. On the approach to this site it looks like you are just entering a big green field – but the real treasure lies hidden underneath the surface. The caves stretch over a mile underground and have wonderful stalagmites and stalactites to see, which are particularly spectacular in torchlight. It is rumoured that the pirates of the Caribbean used to use The Hatchet Bay Caves to shelter.
A Governor’s Harbor holiday will offer a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The island only has the two seasons which are split into May to October (summer) and November to April (winter). Average daytime temperatures during the winter months are a comfortable 23°C. During the summer months the temperature can creep up to a whopping 31°C but there are sea breezes that help to make it feel a bit cooler. The island is within the hurricane belt with hurricane season running from June to November.
Travellers can fly directly to Eleuthera and indeed to Governor’s Harbor Airport (GHB) which is approximately 4 kilometres outside of Governor’s Harbor itself. There are no direct flights from the UK to the airport but affordable flights are available from operators such as American Airlines, Continental Airlines and Bahamasair. Passengers can depart from various UK airports such as Birmingham (BHX), Heathrow (LHR), London Gatwick (LGW), Manchester (MAN), Glasgow (GLA) and Newcastle(NCL).
