The western section of the island of Barbados is one of the most popular with travellers due to the capital city of Bridgetown being located here. But approximately 15 kilometres north of the capital, visitors will find that a rental villa at Gibbs Beach gives them a sense of exclusion from the hustle and bustle of the tourist masses. Not only will your Gibbs Beach holiday give you peace, you will be privy to some of the most stunning sea views you have ever seen. There are also many activities on offer for those looking for a full and adventurous break.
It is likely that your Gibbs Beach rental villa will be located right on the edge of the beautiful white, sandy beach. This beach is one of the quietest in the whole of Barbados which offers you days of tranquillity and the opportunity to indulge in a number of watersports. Activities available at Gibbs Beach include snorkelling, diving, deep sea fishing, surfing, sailing and pier fishing. Other activities available in the immediate area of Gibbs beach include cycling, swimming, tennis, bird watching and golf.
A must on your Gibbs Beach holiday is a trip to the capital city of Bridgetown for a day. There are many attractions here and visitors can get a taste of the history and culture of the Barbadians.
The first stop on your visit to Bridgetown should be St. Michael’s Cathedral. This building was first built in 1780 but was destroyed by a hurricane. The new building was erected in 1789 and became a cathedral when the Bishop arrived in 1825. The cathedral has a typical English style but has a unique roof over the altar that looks like an inverted front part of a boat.
Another must-do on your list is the Barbados Museum which is housed in an old 19th century prison. The museum has several collections of Barbadian, Amerindian and African artefacts that reflect the culture of Barbados. Exhibit pieces include old maps, paintings and prints.
The island of Barbados is privy to a moderately tropical climate which means that a Gibbs Beach holiday will bring nothing but sunshine and warmth. There is a rainy season between June and November, however, the amount of rain that falls is very minimal. Visitors can experience temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C during the warmer months. Barbados is one of the most easterly of the Lesser Antilles islands which means that it is out of reach of the hurricane belt.
Travellers will land at the only airport on Barbados, namely Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI), which is approximately 50 minutes journey from Gibbs Beach. Airlines such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, Thomson Airways and Thomas Cook Airlines offer cheap flights to the island. Visitors can depart from numerous airports in the UK including Manchester (MAN), Gatwick (LGW), London Heathrow (LHR), Aberdeen (ABZ) and Birmingham (BHX).
