Gers is a landlocked department in Southern France, in the Midi-Pyrenees region. Gers is a very rural region, where the gastronomy has developed over many centuries, and now holds Gers as one of the best places to eat in France. It is a peaceful and incredibly relaxing part of France, where the rolling hills support charming rural villages and wildlife filled woodlands.
Auch, Gers’ ancient capital is a lovely town, whose skyline is dominated by the beautiful Cathedrale de Ste Marie. The town comes to life on market days, and a villa in Gers can hugely benefit from stocking up on local produce from Auch. When in Auch, a walk along the perfectly preserved 18th Century Rue Dessoles is an essential activity.
Mirande is a town founded by monks in 1286, and is now mainly a market town. Much of the original bastide can still be seen, although not in their original condition.
The gastronomy of Gers is unsurpassed in France. This is the centre of fois gras, mushroom and Armagnac production, and fresh ingredients can be found in the market places of many of Gers small market towns, making cooking in a self catering holiday rental in Gers a delight. The Musee de l’Armagnac tells you all you need to know about this fiery brandy, and small independent producers can be found where you see a sign pronouncing ‘Vente Directe’ on the roadside around Auch and Eauze.
In order to work off a few of the extra pounds gained during your stay in a Gers holiday villa, there are 5 golf courses in the department. Auch, Eauze, Fleurence, and Masseuba all have 18 hole courses which are open to the public.
The open countryside crossed by a maze of lakes and rivers means that Gers is a sport and leisure haven too. The Nogaro racetrack has been inviting motorcycle fans to rent holiday rentals in Gers for many years. Cycling and walking are extremely popular, and after a long days sport, there are a range of therapeutic thermal springs to relax in!
Gers does have distinct seasons, ranging from warm summers averaging daily temperatures of over 25°C from June until September. Spring and Autumn remain warm, averaging around 15°C, perfect for walking, cycling and golf, whilst the winter months are cold, dropping to the region of 8°C.
Both Bordeaux (BOD) and Toulouse Airports (TLS) are good options when trying to reach your Gers holiday rental villa. Daily flights from many British Airports land at both of these, and cheap flights to Gers are available with BMIbaby and RyanAir.
