Gelderland is in the east central Netherlands, south of Overijssel. The capital city is Arnhem with a history going back over 1500 years. Much of the area is given over to forests and Natural Park reserves making it ideal for quiet walks and bicycle rides around the delightful area. The Gelderland region has some fine old castles and palaces around this largely agricultural region and many museums to enjoy.
The nature reserves of the Gelderland provide a wonderful area for walking along the scenic terrain. Cycling and roller blading are also popular activities in the Netherlands. The Kroller-Muller Museum Park has hundreds of white bicycles which can be used to get around this peaceful natural reserve where cars are largely banned. It provides visitors with the opportunity to spot the birds and wildlife in the area from the tiny bicycle lanes which run through forested areas, sand dunes, marshes and lakes. As with most places in the Netherlands, sampling the local cheeses is a real pleasure, especially the mature Edam and Gouda cheeses.
One of the oldest centres close to your Gelderland holiday home is Nijmegen, once a Roman military camp and now a large city. Visitors may enjoy the Museum of African Culture and more topically, the National Bicycle Museum along with Velorama which has more than 250 veteran cycles on display. For art lovers, the collection of Modern Art at the Kroller-Muller Museum is a must-see in Otterlo. Arnhem was largely destroyed in World War II and the restoration of some of its monuments continues. The rich heritage of the area can be seen in the many palaces and castles including the Palace van Loo in Apeldoorn, the Huis Bergh Castle and the Bronkhorst. Amsterdam is also within easy reach on a day trip from Gelderland where canal boat trips, museums, churches, flower markets and old houses can all be enjoyed.
Gelderland has a typical temperate climate with warm damp summers and cool winters. Temperatures generally reach 22°C (72°F) in mid summer and drop to an average 5°C (41°F) in the winter. The wettest months are from June to September with around 15cm of rainfall.
The nearest airport to your Gelderland holiday rental is Schipol (AMS) Airport which is in the capital city of Amsterdam. Rotterdam (RTM) Airport also has regular flights from all over Europe.
