Gattieres is a centuries-old village that sits atop a hill overlooking the Var River, in the south of France. Although Gattieres is predominantly used as a base for exploring nearby towns and cities such as Nice, Cannes and Antibes, it is also a popular destination in its own right, with options for lovers of the great outdoors and culture-vultures, great restaurants and some high-quality accommodation options.
The village of Gattieres is so typical of this part of France – sitting atop a hill and being the home of a number of attractive open squares, ancient buildings, old fountains and traditional family businesses. Aspects such as these make the village a great destination for a lazy stroll on a warm summers afternoon, and with plenty of shops, cafes and bars to be found there are plenty of opportunities for stop-offs along the way.
Walking and hiking are popular activities in the surrounding hills, and will provide you with the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air amongst almost endless olive groves and fruit orchards. With so much delicious local produce on show it will certainly whet your appetite for a hearty evening meal, and that hardest choice will be whether to stay within the centre Gattieres that evening or visit one of the nearby towns or cities. Gattieres is just twenty minutes by car from the centre of Nice, and the use of a hire car is advised in order to explore the area to its fullest – though you may wish to take a taxi or public transport if you fancy a big night out.
As well as Nice, the local area has a number of other towns and cities that are well worth a visit when holidaying in Gattieres. The seaside destination of Cagnes-sur-Mer (17km) is one such option, providing an array of water and beach-related activity options, as well as some of the best restaurants in the region. Vence (11km) is another close-to-home option, and is revered as a hub or arts and culture.
Gattieres is at its most popular with tourists during summer, and with temperatures of around 30°C, plenty of sunshine and largely dry weather at this time of the year, it is easy to see why. Temperatures in autumn and winter are generally mild, though rainfall does increase, and outside of peak season you should expect the odd shower.
With Gattieres being just 15km from Nice Cote d’Azur Airport (NCE) it is possible to be at your pre-booked accommodation in the village within minutes of collecting your luggage upon arrival. Several UK-based airlines fly to Nice, so the best advice is to shop around, search for the best deals and then book as far in advance as possible.
