Encinitas is a coastal city in California, USA, located around 25 miles north of San Diego. The city is an ideal destination for surfers, with six miles of rugged coastline and a number of great surfing beaches. The city of Encinitas can be split into five distinct areas. The main ones of interest to tourists are: New Encinitas, which contains a large shopping precinct and a golf course, Old Encinitas – which has a small beach and some self catering accommodation, and Leucadia – which is also an older area, and is home to several art galleries, shops, restaurants, and its popular beach.
Encinitas is a surfer’s paradise, with a number of fantastic surfing beaches to choose from. Grand View, Leucadia, D Street and Moonlight Beach are just some of the popular spots that all seem to have their own personalities and characteristics. As well as surfing, Moonlight State Beach offers swimming, fishing, tennis, volleyball and great views out into the Pacific Ocean.
For those who are not interested in surfing, there are a number of points of interest around the city, including the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, which displays historical artefacts from the area. Also consider visiting the Quail Botanical Gardens and the La Paloma Theatre.
There are various events held in Encinitas through the year, and none attracts more visitors than the annual Wavecrest Woodie Meet. This is the largest rally of wooden bodied vehicles in the world, and is unlike anything most people will have seen before.
San Diego County is famous for its coastline, which is rich in quality beaches and water sports opportunities. Other coastal sports well worth visiting whilst on holiday in Encinitas include Carlsbad (7 miles away), Oceanside (13 miles) and the city of San Diego, which is 25 miles away. The second-largest city in California has some great visitor attractions that include a famous zoo, great nightlife and some fantastic shopping opportunities, and also plays host to a number of events through the year.
Encinitas has an extremely mild climate, with temperatures peaking at an average of 23C during summer months. It is unusual to see temperatures that are higher than 30C or lower than 7C on any given day within the year. Rainfall is on the low side all year round.
San Diego International (SAN) is the primary destination airport for holidays in Encinitas, and is located 26 miles away. Regular directs can be found from London, through companies such as British Airways and KLM. BA also flies from Leeds Bradford and Newcastleon a regular basis, though not always direct.
