The beaches of the Costa de la Luz are often regarded as some of the very best in Spain, and El Palmar is arguably the best surfing beach on this stretch of coast. Just a short walk from the beach are a number of amenities and high quality holiday rental options, meaning travel time is cut down and surfing time is increased. The beach hosts the national surfing championships every March, so book early if you plan to visit during this month of the year.
Surfing is the main activity in El Palmar, and the beach is the home of the annual national surfing championships, providing proof of its excellent rips. El Palmar surfing may be top quality, but is also far from busy – the ideal combination for an avid surfer.
Even if you do not surf, you will find that the beach at El Palmar is long, sandy and clean – making it perfect for families, and one of the finest beaches in the area. Despite the popularity of the beach, El Palmar is not over-run with tourists, and a relaxing holiday can be still be enjoyed in this peaceful corner of Andalucía.
Just a few metres from the beach is a residential area, which is home of most of the holiday rental accommodation in El Palmar, as well as a selection of small shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. This not only means that you never have far to travel to get something to eat, but also that you do not have far to walk at night after an enjoyable meal or a few glasses of local wine. The cosy bars and eateries give something of a romantic, secluded feel to El Palmar that also attracts many young couples to the area.
Whilst staying in an El Palmar villa it is strongly recommended that you get out and explore the local area. The nearest town is Conil de la Frontera, just 7km up the coast, which is rich in local traditions and the home of some excellent restaurants. 14km inland from El Palmar is Vejer de la Frontera, which rises up almost 200 metres above sea level, and offers panoramic views for miles around. The historic city of Cadiz can also be reached in under an hour.
The climate along this area of the Costa de la Luz typically consists of hot summers and mild winters. The daily mean temperature rarely drops below 12C during December, January and February, and then really picks up from March onwards. Rainfall is at its lowest during July and August.
Jerez Airport (XRY) is the nearest airport to El Palmar, and the 79km journey should take just under an hour if your travel to your accommodation by car. The main options for getting to Jerez from the UK are via Manchester, through Thomas Cook Airlines and London Stansted, through Ryanair.
