El Hierro is one of the lesser known Canary Islands. It measures just 50km from one end to the other and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with an outstanding diversity of terrain. It has a rugged cliff-lined coast and clear waters for swimming and scuba diving as well as secluded coves and woodland. Its volcanic origin can clearly be seen in its dramatic landscape and high peaks. The capital of the island is Valverde. El Hierro is linked by ferry and regular flights to Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
