Holidaymakers looking for winter skiing and or scenic walks will find it all at East Styria in Austria. Located in the southern east of the country this is a great region to either relax and enjoy the views or take part in many different activities. The winter provides superb skiing, cross country skiing, winter or snowshoe walking, tobogganing, backcountry skiing and much more for visitors. With the beautiful backdrop of the mountains this is a glorious place for hiking, horse riding, Nordic walking, running, cycling and even climbing. The lake at Stubenbergsee attracts visitors for its sandy beach and swimming as well as a pirate ship and slides for kids to play on. Many other sports are available in the area during the summer such as beach volleyball, golf, tennis and white water rafting. This a great place to unwind and East Styria features several spa facilities. There are several significant shopping areas in the region where visitors can purchase gifts and souvenirs. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and beverages from local stores. The resort also has numerous eateries such as restaurants, cafes and inns.
There are a number of interesting places to visit here with cable cars transporting visitors up the mountains. The region has many castles and gardens to view in places such as Stubenbergsee. Visitors can go to several museums in East Styria including the Gironcoli Museum. Visitors may like to venture further afield and take a day trip to Salzburg, which was the birth place of Mozart and has some fantastic historic buildings. Graz is about a 50 minute drive away and also features some wonderful buildings such as Gosting Castle.
The south of Austria including the region of Styria is warmer and sunnier than the rest of the country in the summer. However, winter is as cold and snowy as in the north of the country. The warmest time of the year is July and August with average maximum temperatures around 24 to 25 degrees centigrade. Ironically the warmest months are also the wettest with around 15 wet days per month on average in May, June and July.
The nearest airport is at Graz (GRZ) 50 minutes drive from East Styria. Flights arrive here from various European cities including Berlin, Frankfurt, Gothenburg, London, Munich, Vienna and Zurich amongst others. Visitors from other countries can fly to Vienna International Airport (VIE), which has flights from Amsterdam, Athens, Beijing, Berlin, Brussels, Dubai, London, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Toronto, Washington and Zürich amongst other destinations with the biggest airline here, Austrian Airlines. Weiz in East Styria is approximately two hours from Vienna Airport. Car rental firms are located at both airports.
