Lying just off Tunisia’s eastern coast, in the Gulf of Gabes, Djerba Island is a popular tourist destination. The island is renowned for its wonderful beaches and dramatic sunsets, drawing thousands of visitors from throughout Europe every year. Visitors spending their holidays on Djerba Island will also discover that the island’s mainly flat, semi-arid landscape was used for the exterior scenes for the first Star Wars film in 1977. There are two main towns on the island – Houmt-Souk and Ajim, where the majority of the self catering holiday rental apartments and villas can be found.
Although Djerba Island covers an area of just under 200 square miles, making it North Africa’s largest, it can still be easily explored in a hired car, moped or on a bicycle. Walkers and hikers can also take advantage of a guided tour into the island’s arid interior, where they may enjoy a camel ride and really feel like a local! It will come as no surprise to visitors spending their holidays on Djerba Island to discover that water sports activities are very popular here. Kayaking, windsailing, jet-skiing, scuba diving or a ride on a ‘banana boat’ can all be enjoyed. The less energetic tourists, however, can simply relax on the warm sands and top-up the tan, before cooling off in the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Gabes.
Visitors spending their holidays in Djerba Island who are looking to pick up a locally crafted bargain or souvenir may head to a traditional Tunisian market, or souk. As the name suggests, the town of Houmt-Souk has the island’s largest and busiest, where tourists can barter alongside locals for a diverse range of products – from pottery, jewellery and fresh food to clothing and even live animals! The town also boasts a number of interesting historical buildings and landmarks. Perhaps the biggest tourists draws are Aghlabid fortress, the 15th century Borj El K’Bir castle and the many traditional ancient Tunisian ‘fondouks’ and ‘menzel’ to be found throughout the island.
Djerba Island enjoys a warm, Mediterranean climate. Summers temperatures here can easily reach the mid-thirties degrees Celsius, whilst visitors spending their holidays on Djerba Island in the winter months will still find that temperatures average a pleasant 12 to 18 degrees. The majority of the island’s average annual rainfall of 16 inches falls in the winter.
Travellers from the UK looking to spend their holidays on Djerba Island can fly from London Gatwick (LGW) or Manchester (MAN) direct to Djerba Zarzis International Airport (DJE), with Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways.
