Depoe Bay is a unique destination teeming with marine life. It has a rocky coastline of sea caves and lava beds spouting geysers with each crashing wave.
Depoe Bay is a nature lover’s dream destination. Nicknamed the “Whale watching Capital of the Oregon Coast”, visitors can watch orcas and huge grey whales frolic and blow water spouts right in the bay for about 10 months of the year. The surging waves are popular for surfing or you can walk for miles along the firm sand. Younger visitors can discover rock pools teeming with ocean life in miniature. Fishing can be enjoyed from the beach or dockside and boat charters take visitors out for an exciting day deep-sea fishing for rockfish, salmon, halibut and tuna. The waterfront offers great shopping and dining opportunities within sight of the ocean. Gift shops, art studios, galleries with fine collectibles, saltwater “taffy” and maritime souvenirs can all be found by browsing this quaint fairytale fishing village.
The Depoe Bay Whale Centre is Oregon’s newest state park and is dedicated to making information available to the public about the local whale population. From the observation station, visitors get a grandstand view of the bay and any whales that may be playing or feeding there. Another popular attraction is the Heceta Head Lighthouse just north of Florence, about 37 miles up the coast from Depoe Bay holiday homes. Set in 549 acres of trails, tide pools and beach at Devil’s Elbow State Park, the lighthouse is said to be haunted by the “Grey Lady”. Portland, the “City of Roses” has plenty to see and do. Tour the microbreweries, visit the state parks or tour the gardens of this green city.
The weather in Depoe Bay has warm dry summers and mild wet winters. The proximity to the warm Pacific waters moderate the winter temperatures but the coast is known for its showery rain. In July and August, temperatures reach 27°C (81°F) while in winter daytime highs average 7-11°C (45-52°F) with overnight lows of 1°C (34°F). The area has the heaviest showers from November to March with around 15 days rain per month while in summer the showers are much less frequent.
The nearest airport for visitors staying in Depoe Bay beach houses is Portland International (PDX) Airport which is about 110 miles away. A car is recommended for exploring the Oregon coast, so pick up a hire car from the airport and drive to the coast along the OR-18 allowing about 2½ hours for the journey. Visitors driving to the area from other states will find it is easy to reach via Interstate 84 or the I-5.
