County Fermanagh is in Northern Ireland and part of the Province of Ulster. The county is approximately seventy-five miles from Belfast and just under a hundred miles from Dublin. The counties of Tyrone, Monaghan, Donegal, Leitrim and Cavan border County Fermanagh. Fermanagh and it neighbour County Cavan are known as Irelands Lake District and the two main industries in this area are tourism and agriculture. The main town is Enniskillen.
County Fermanagh has something for everyone whatever the season. Spectacular forest parks and nature reserves, great subterranean waterways, magical caves, stately homes, castle ruins and megalithic tombs. This is a tourist area and holiday accommodation is plentiful but the best option is to book into a self-catering holiday cottage, as this gives you the freedom you need to explore the area. Then at the end of your day you can relate your experiences in a welcoming pub, as you listen to Irish music, or eat out in an excellent gourmet restaurant.
Irish cottages put you at the heart of Ecotourism a unique region known as the Greenbox. You can immerse yourself in heritage, nature and local culture and bypass the tourist trail by booking a country cottage. The Greenbox is surrounded by water from the Lough Erne, Atlantic Ocean and the Shannon Erne Waterway.
Eco-tourism doesn't just mean staying in country cottages or the greening of the tourist industry but is about environmental sustainability, promotion of the cultural values of the locals and proactive nature conservation. Ecotourism appeals to the socially and ecologically conscious and Greenbox is the ecotourism label for this area. Interestingly this certification label is relevant to all sectors of the tourism but not holiday cottages or what is normally called an eco cottage.
