Commonmoor or Common Moor should not be confused with Croxley Common Moor in Hertfordshire. It is situated Cornwall near the Sibley Lake Reservoir in Liskeard and close to St Cleer, Higher Tremar, Darite and Minions. The fishing villages of Looe and Polperro and market town of Launceston are all within easy reach.
Commonmoor has its origins in Cornwall’s tin and copper mining history and still very much a community. There are many cottages in the area that remain from the mining heyday and several have been converted in self catering holiday lets. Being a rural area barn conversions are also popular for Cornish holidays. Visitors to the area prefer self catering over hotels as it gives more freedom to explore Cornwall.
Cornish cottages in Commonmoor are perfectly located for exploring the ancient sites of Bodmin Moor, which has facilities for walking, fishing birdwatching, horse riding, cycling and dog walking. They are also ideal if you just want to relax in a quiet setting in the beautiful Cornish countryside. The nearby village of Minions has a village shop and pub.
Cottage holidays are also a perfect base to explore Jamaica Inn, the Eden Project, Tavistock, Dartmoor, Heligan or to travel into Devon to the City of Plymouth for shopping. It is also within easy reach of the south coast beaches and the trendy surfing beaches on the north coast such as Perranporth, Newquay, Polzeath and Bude.
Siblyback Reservoir offers an extensive range of facilities and activities, which include sailing, rowing boat hire, canoeing and windsurfing and it is a prime trout fishery. It has miles of walk around the scenic lake, bird watching, tearoom and children's play areas. The River Fowey flows from its source and spectacularly tumbles down at Golitha Falls. There are some good walks to the Neolithic monoliths, the Hurlers and the natural rock formations of the Cheesewring.
Also nearby holiday cottages is Porfell Animal Land Wildlife Park, which is educational and entertaining with woodland walks, tearoom, animal talks and demonstrations, hand feeding, animal petting area, picnic area and gift shops. Ken Caro Garden is a four-acre specialist garden set high above Bicton Manor Woods. It is colourful all year round and has panoramic views. Rough Tor near Camelford is the remains of a cluster of Bronze Age huts and there are several burial chamber and Cairns near by. The ruins of St Michael's chapel sit on the top of Rough Tor.
Boconnoc is the largest park in Cornwall surrounding an 18th century mansion and was featured in the television series Poldark. It has twenty acres of gardens, a 14th century church, a water powered sawmill and more than a hundred deer. Dupath Well is a medieval holy well on the fringes of Callington near to Cotehele House. Pilgrims suffering from skin diseases used to visit the well. Restormel Castle has an enormous circular keep overlooking its mote and bailey.
The weather in Commonmoor, like most of Cornwall is mild and sometimes unpredictable.
Plymouth and Newquay airports and the ferry port at Plymouth serve Commonmoor. Liskeard station is the nearest station and National Express coaches stop at nearby Liskeard. Other local bus operators include Bakers, A-line, Western National, Group Travel, and Western Greyhound.
